cpanel does, and its pretty basic but useful.
got me wondering if DA does or if anyone knows any plugins/addons for it.

presently for my main domain I am using sbs2011 domain with exchange 2010 and gfi mailarchiver but was thinking of making some changes to simplify.

you guys that actually host for people, how do you handle it?
purely through retention rules and enforcing deletions or do you have other methods?

thanks for any hints.

thinking about it this topic may have been better for General Forum, sorry about that.

Hello,

What do you mean by archiving capability? What are they as how you see it? Currently nothing of the kind is presented in Directadmin, nevertheless Directadmin allows to configure how long to store emails in Spambox/Trash folders.

Probably there is a plugin for roundcube with the functionality you need.

As we do not offer free hosting we do not limit time and our users can store their emails as long as they want.

had not thought of roundcube plugin, but I was thinking archive/retention IAW sarbaanes-oxley and other laws in US.
on exchange server the gfi software saves all incoming/outgoing/internal email in web searchable sql database, so no matter that the exchange store or client ost/pst retention rules are the messages are recoverable.
there are comparable products for 'nix based dedicated email servers, the cpanel method is a really really bare method, but had not seen anything using directadmin so was curious.

So if to say it in simple words, by archiving emails you mean storing them in SQL database. Right? If so, then there is nothing of the kind existing in Directadmin for now as far as I know. So, you probably should really check plugins for roundcube or other 3rd party solutions, or post it a feature request. Not too sure, would it be accepted or not.

database is, for my needs, best but anything that retains iaw a myriad of laws that nobody really understands LOL.
its not something directadmin should add themselves IMO, I was wondering if anyone knew of en existing product that worked with it. should have clarified that a bit better, sorry.
will check out roundcube and also see if I can find anything based on the exim mta. don't remember if I searched that route.

No there is nothing like that in directadmin. I highly doubt cpanel has that too. If anything cpanel is just copying all mail to another account.

sorry I missed this reply, I had not heard of that function before so will look into that.
thanks

The email-only backups would work for incoming email but only if all users set their local clients to not delete, and then never deleted email off the server; at least not until it was backed up.

So possibly a useless scenario.

The right way to do it is to deliver all email to two places; a local store (as now) and a remote store which would never be touched. Years ago I built a system which would scan and archive mortgage papers onto read-only platters. Many years ago. But read-only is important for government mandated archiving. And of course outgoing email wouldn't be archived unless it was sent through the server that did the saving.

There's a reason why these services are exensive.

thats pretty much how the exchange and gfi setup work.
all emails in/out/internal seen by the journal and gfi polls journal user and archives it per the applicable username. so while its on same machien in my case (does not have to be) its 2 distinct systems. and once in database it cannot (easily) be removed. took me a few to learn how to apply spam filters to avoid archiving viagra spam emails LOL :)
really handy, can call up emails from 2007 or so onwards (I rotate active database every 6 months) yet clients ost/pst files under 1gb and the archived ones are able to be seen through a web interface and also restored to the user mailbox if needed..
if I could somehow leverage exim (easily as I am not well versed in it) I was thinking I could make something work and save money/resources.
its not critical, more of a "if I can do it I will" thing.

should this topic be moved as its more a general/learning topic and not an issue?
I messed up when I posted it, sorry.

Define a transport_filter (just like the spamassassin block) and use your own perl script (or whatever language you want to use) that logs the mail somewhere.
