Email Set Up Problems

I do own the server...
I thought that the email was working, however it's not.

Our domain is booktalk.com
I set the following in DNS
mail A IP
mail.booktalk.com A IP
mail MX 10
pop A IP

My problem is not only with Outlook.. my email [email protected] seems to not be working at all. A friend said they got an "undeliverable" message and when I go to squirrelmail my inbox is empty although I've sent "tests".

Odd thing is that Outlook seems to be "connecting" ..but I get no mail

Any suggestions?
I am not a "newbie" but am not really knowledgeable on the higher level tech stuff... so assume I need step by step instructions ;)

Just FYI..
I just tried logging in via ssh..
when I type find /usr/local/directadmin/scripts
I get "permission denied"
I had seen that as a possible "fix" to .. run set_permissions.

So I need a different solution than that.. unless I'm doing something wrong in PUtty. I logged in with my admin log in.

Talking to myself..but feel free to jump in and help..

I remembered that I had to log in with "root" instead of admin.
logged in and used ./set_permissions.sh

Did that "run" the script?
It showed me what it's set for..but should I have edited it?

I just tested my [email protected] email in Outlook Express..
I "sent" an email to my aol account..and that worked.
But the one I sent from aol to booktalk has not come through.

Any suggestions ..please?? I'm frantic.

Ok.. last test from AOL to booktalk was returned ..here is error message:

Question: is the problem that the "nameserver" for the domain is "talkink.com" because there are multiple domains on the server..and we are just using one??
But I have the mail.booktalk.com set to the IP not a nameserver.. should it be?

erm, is it possible because you're sending to the wrong email address i.e. booktak instead of booktalk?

Ack.. I've got to get that wrong spelling out of my address book..
I'll test again.

Ok.. I still need help..
I've done all of the above.. but still can't get email to work in outlook express.

I had some people send me emails.. they are in squirrel mail..but I never got them in outlook.

I've done the following tests ..
Sent from squirrelmail to AOL ..that worked
Sent from AOL to [email protected] .. it showed up on both Squirrel AND Outlook.. why did that work, but the ones from my other friends didn't.
I haven't changed anything inbetween these tests!

I'm so confused and at a loss as to how to fix this.

I have Outlook Express set pop3 mail.booktalk.com and smtp the same.

HELP !!!!

Ok..for anyone else with this problem.. here's how I had to fix it.

We have a server with multiple domains hosted on it..
but the main nameserver and server name is talkink.com

When I make an email account on one of the other domains it
tells me to set up my pop3 with mail.thatdomain.com

however.. once I switched to mail.talkink.com .. all of the messages that I wasn't getting in Outlook..came through.

So even though the email address was [email protected]
I had to use mail.talkink.com as the incoming and outgoing server. :D

That doesn't sound right, it should work even if you use mail.booktalk.com

I've got A.com as my main server domain, my client has B.com and they send/get their mails through mail.B.com

It is possible that when you were testing, mail.booktalk.com hasn't propagated yet. Why don't you try again in another day's time to see if mail.booktalk.com works.

The booktalk.com domain was moved and set up a week and a half ago.. I've been trying to get it to work for over a week.. so I don't think waiting to propagate would make a difference.. it should have propagated a long time ago.

The site itself has been online and working properly since day one.

The reason I tried that was because I saw a post in an old thread about a similar problem ..and they told the person to find out what the server name was (they had an account on someone else's server).. and to use that instead of thier domain in the Outlook set up.

That makes it sound more like an Outlook problem than anything else.

If you're interested in giving it some more tests, I'll be happy to spam you a bit from different servers and see if any of it shows up in your mailbox. Or if you can just give me a temporary email account on booktalk.com then I'll play around with using mail.booktalk.com as mail servers and see what gives.

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem by the sounds of it.. I have about 20 or so account sset up in DA, some i tell to use mail.website.com as their incoming and outgoing, but then I was informed nobody was receiving my emails?? as soon as i swapped my outgoing beck to the original isp's mail.theirname.com... it worked fine!!

How come outlook express cannot send out using the (what should be) mail.website.com server? You dont get warnings, it goes into sent items... nobody would ever know its not sent!

THe annoying part about it all is, if you send to any other account on same DA server, it gets there no probs... just sending to other servers.. which you NEED to do all the time

any thoughts/help would be greatfully read

It seemed like once I set up the following in the DNS Settings.. there have been less problems.

add to list:

mail.website.com A your IP

I did that for each domain name on the server.

I still think that part of my problems were that these domains had been on another host .. for about a month.. they were on both. The nameservers for the websites were changed..and that was fine, however, I think that some of the email addresses that were on BOTH the old and new servers .. were getting "lost".
Any emails I set up on the new server..that were totally new.. didn't have the same problems.
We've totally disbanded the old account and I think that helped as well.

The most common reason is the ISP is blocking outgoing traffic on port 25. However that does not seem to be the case here.

You'd need to watch the /var/log/exim/mainlog while sending email (use the tail -f command) during the time you send the email, and see what the logs tell you.

I had a similar problem earlier, but it only occurred for domains that was previously on the same server. Exim still thinks they are internal so never routed them out. Have you tried emailing to an account on say hotmail/yahoo/gmail?
