I am having a strange ftp problem... I can upload to my DA server via ftp okay, but download speeds are really bad. (about 8kbps from server to home pc, and 1024kbps from home to server)

HTTP gives 10mbps from server to home, and 1mbps from home to server...

any ideas?

this is to do with the ADSL plan you are on with your ISP

Generall the download / upload speeds are different. Please check this with your ISP. Its nothing to do with the server.

I have tried both active and passive ftp tsiou, and yes, sometimes it disconnects me all together.

rohit, I typically get 8 - 10 mbps download and 1mbps up, but from the server I am getting 8k (NOT mbps) down (a dialup modem does about 4x faster). I only have this problem with the ftp protocol, when using http there is no problem. As a temporary fix I am just using frontpage extensions, as that works fine.

Not that I am aware of. I am running centos4.6, where would I go to check these rules?

How far is your server from you. Run a traceroute to the ip on your server. It is probably the reason the speeds are slow. Firewalls will not cause problems like this.

How many hops is your home to your server? Anything over 15 hops will highly degrade your connection to server.

There were 16 hops. Could this be the problem?

So my use of frontpage seems to be the long term solution?

I would think that frontpage just uses ftp too? Did you try a different ftp client to see if it is faster. Try disabling firewall to see if it is the problem but I highly doubt it.

frontpage uses http from what I understand. I tried several different ftp clients, and all had the same problem. Also problem exists when I tried to have a friend download the files for me.

Do you have anything else to suggest?

Turn off your firewall (temporarily) and see if it makes a difference.
