getting Subdomains to work

I created a subdomain and I see it in my folder structure, but whenever I try to access it through my browser it gives me a "forbidden" error, something about me trying to access /

But I don't understand why my subdomain would be trying to access /, isn't it by default going to look for index.htm (or index.html, which I'm also trying to setup right now)? And I see an index.htm file in there, even if it is the default one. Is there something else I need to set in some configuration file to make it work?

Also in general, when people create webpages, is it smarter to use hyperlinks which have relative paths or absolute URL paths?

Try putting an index.html file in your directory with HTML and BODY in it. Your apache is probably configured to never show the directory structure.
