Hotmail issue

Hello,

The file posted was a patch.
This means it can be automatically applied by the "patch" program.

eg:
Code:
patch -p0 < nameofpatch.txt

As for the syntax questions, the --- means the new file he's changed and +++ is the old original unchanged file. The diff program finds the differences between them, thus giving us our patch.
The - character are the lines that are removed, and the + are the lines that are added to implment the patch. (or vice versa if the order of the files with the diff command were backwards). I think the patch was just changed a bit to fix that, so the patch command might work now.

uhm yes sorry..
But don't worck, if i send an email with my outlook express and smtp exim on my dedicated hosting the mail arrive to hotmail and gmail, if i send with my webmail or php script the log write:

2007-09-21 18:24:29 1IYlIr-0002yy-T6 <= [email protected] H=alessandromizzoni.com (www.alessandromizzoni.com) [84.16.231.191] P=esmtpa A=login:[email protected] S=1151 [email protected] T="Notifica inserimento annuncio nel mercatino" from <[email protected]> for [email protected]
2007-09-21 18:24:31 1IYlIr-0002yy-T6 => [email protected] F=<[email protected]> R=lookuphost T=remote_smtp S=1190 H=mx2.hotmail.com [65.54.245.40] C="250 <[email protected]> Queued mail for delivery"

and on my hotmail email don't arrive any email.

grrrrr

"Queued mail for delivery" means they've accepted it, and it should be "clean", since they've accepted it. If it doesn't arrive, I couldn't say why, you'd need to ask them what they're doing with it.

Solution for the mails to hotmail that vanish in thin air!!!!!!!!!!!

First check RDNS and SPF records, then use a windows machine with XP SP2 or greater (NOT THUNDERBIRD) then your mails wil end up in spam section of the hotmail user... not very good but im glad i can send them and they will get devliverd.

Very unfair of microsoft, unfortunatly used to it...

thx for the helps, the RDNS and SPF have a good configuration.
The email that i send with outlook or thunderbird arrive without any problem to hotmail.
Yesterday I found the problem!!! when i send a messessage from php with sendmail(exim) with only one line in the message it don't arrive. Instead If i write a messagge with html tags and 5 or 6 lines in the message it's arrive in the hotmail inbox.
But now, if my client send only 1 or 2 lines in the email? uhm... i must resolve this problem.

We don't use Windows at all, and we don't have any problems sending email from outside the server. The problem we see is when the server sends the email, and even then, it's doesn't always happen.

The best advice ive given customers is get a gmail account. We can't always guarentee delivery to hotmail

This is no solution for just from the outside, this is from a pop client to hotmail ONLY.
If you can send emails from a pop client to a hotmail account from linux that i really would like to know about it.

My point is that we can. I just sent tests to my test hotmail account from two of our servers and from our ISP. Email from one of our servers was identified as spam; the two other emails were delivered to the inbox.

This would indicate that the problem is that hotmail doesn't like the server, rather than that the problem is in DirectAdmin or linux.

Jeff

Part of the problem resides in mail headers, not in DNS of SPF.

I experience the same problems as described above. When I use Outlook or Thunderbird to send mail through the servers smtp; it ends up fine at hotmail.

If I use Squirrelmail and compose a new message and send it off; it doesn't end up at hotmail at all. Same message CC-ed to Gmail, works splendid.

I am working on this problem quite a while.

The problem is not just a SPF record, but I believe it is a combination of Hotmails SPAM services, I'll quote what I got from postmaster techhelp:

We received your message at [email protected].

This message was delivered to the Junk Mail folder in this account.

I am unable to disclose what specifically within the content of your message is causing our filters to view it as unsolicited e-mail.

In general, however, I can explain what happens with our filters.
Hotmail uses two spam filtering technologies. We use the Brightmail system and we use our own SmartScreen filters.

I can't speak to Brightmail's filtering technology as they are a totally separate company but I can talk a little bit about SmartScreen.

SmartScreen is built around the technology of machine learning.
SmartScreen's filters are trained to recognize what is spam and what isn't spam.
In short, we filter incoming emails that look like spam. I am not able to go into any specific details about what these filters specifically entail, as this would render them useless.

We reviewed your domains and DNS zone file and could not find the presence of your SPF record(s).

If you would like to receive the benefits of email authentication and validation, you need to create and add an SPF record for each domain.
You can easily create your SPF record via our Sender-ID wizard located at http://www.microsoft.com/senderid/wizard
Note this wizard provides flexibility to customize your records.
To maximize compatibility and deliverability among receiving networks we strongly encourage you to NOT include a "PTR" record (as also discouraged by the IETF in RFC 4408), and to create a record optimized for BOTH the "Mail From" and the Purported Responsible Address, (PRA).

Once the SPF record has been created it may take up to 2 business days to be fully replicated in the DNS and our systems.

If you have any questions regarding this please let me know.
I hope that the information that I have provided to you has been helpful.
You may also be able to find additional information on common delivery questions at the Hotmail Postmaster Site found at: http://postmaster.msn.com/.
I would like to highlight some key areas which I believe are appropriate to your company.

. Monitor user complaints. Hotmail also has a sender complaint feedback loop program Junk Email Reporting Program (JMRP). Enrollment in this, free of charge, program will benefit you as a sender as it will keep your e-mail lists updated and populated with interested MSN Hotmail Customers. Participation in this program will remove those MSN Hotmail Customers who do not want to receive e-mails from your company. If you are interested in joining this program please visit Http://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?p...=support_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts.
While using the SNDS tool, enrollment in the JMRP or having your IPs registered with Sender ID will not allow emails from your mail servers to bypass our filters, these are in place to help legitimate companies deliver their emails to Hotmail Customers.

. SenderScore Certified Mail Program. Many legitimate mailers and marketers have qualified and joined this "white listing" program to improve mail deliverability and decrease email from being filtered to the Junk E-mail Folder. Sender Score is a third party program, administered by Return Path. Sender Score (www.senderscorecertified.com) is the only White Listing service to which we subscribe.

Once we are able to confirm that the SPF record for your domain verhoefprojectondersteuning.nl has been created we will be happy to continue our investigation into your filtering issue.
The troubleshooting steps in this email are recommendations only.
Microsoft makes no guarantees that following these steps will guarantee deliverability to MSN, Hotmail, or Live.com customers.

As you can see, thay are not ginving the details.
( Cause if they do, they perhaps would get even more spam. )

I believe the Directadmin box works fine, and the problem resides when you configure an toher DNS server to be used for a domain then the DNS server on the box. (As stated with the firstfind dns server problem in the beginning of the post.)

I use the nameservers from my domain-seller, and got the following SPF record set (with a little help from hotmail about what would be best.)

##DOMAIN## TXT v=spf1 mx ip4:195.144.2.41 mx:mail.##DOMAIN## -all

So would make:
krijgsman.be TXT v=spf1 mx ip4:195.144.2.41 mx:mail.krijgsman.be -all

I sent mails with both squirrelmail and webmail, both never got received on my hotmail account. (Both mails originate from the Directadmin box on 195.144.2.41) But now I try sending a mail with my ISP provider mailserver.

smtp.versatel.nl -> 62.58.50.46
Using outlook express.
and yes, there it is, just in my inbox, not in junkmail or what.

So what does this teach me? Perhaps that hotmail identifies provider mailservers and gives them a + for good behaviour, and put the mail trough, even without the negative SPF record?
Guess so.

Then what about contents:
My test mail from outlook just contained the word "test". The hotmail staff specified to me not to use that term during testing (Guess it's a often used spam title / content? ) but it got trough!

The other hand, the e-mail I sent with directadmin / exim was a username / password like e-mails, no URL's or domains in it. But very important in most cases.

It is these e-mails I got complaints about on my server that they don't got received in hotmail.

Well for a final test: Is ALL e-mail from the server blocked from hotmail?
To test this I run a simple php script to sent an e-mail to my hotmail account.

PHP:
<?php
mail('[email protected]', 'This is a test e-mail', 'test','From: [email protected]');
?>
Well, I never got it, can't even find if it got sent from the box.

I believe it would have something to do with the way headers got build + rating from the box at hotmail (rating based on type of e-mail, sender, ip, spf etc.)

I wonder what the patch does? (The one posted in this topic about headers in phpmailer)
Is this patched automatically implied if I update directadmin?

Armand

Hotmail's response is actually very helpful, and I'll write in detail later.

But the biggest issue that pops right out is this:

Someone receives email at their domain on your server.

They've got a forward to send it to their account at hotmail.

When it gets to hotmail, they read it and report it as spam.

Once they've done this a few times it's always spam according to hotmail.

AOL does the same thing. I think Comcast does, too.

AOL at least lets you go to their postmaster.aol.com site, and set yourself up to receive copies of every email from your server reported to them as spam.

Once that's done, they generally allow everything through.

Hotmail and Comcast don't seem to care enough to do that.

Jeff

Well they told me the server was not blacklisted, but perhaps it has a penalty because of the Brightmail's technology then?

I'll await your detailed writing :-)

Regards,
Armand

I doubt it's Brightmail. I think they're wrong to blame the problem on a technology they use but refuse to disclose, but we have to live with it. I've already written of my own issues with hotmail.

Jeff

Hello All,

Maybe You can find this interesting.
This is a hotmail recommended service (and perhaps they own it) .
Its really hard to by pass their SPAM filters. However I' m able to send my mails from a properly configged windows machine, but not from my Centos. God knows what criterias are being used to accept mail, and not be concidered as SPAM.

Personally I think it's extortion.

Many hosting companies (in fact many businesses) refuse to do business with users with hotmail addresses.

I still haven't had time; trying to get to it today.

same issue

i just recently got a server and everything got setup right (I think) but now i am dealing with email issues, for some odd reasons if i send email through outlook, it lands right in the inbox of the recipient but if i send it through webmail it goes directly into their spam/junk box and so does the emails from php scripts. Can any one help me please?

my domain is videopilot360.com and ip is 12.158.191.69.

exactly same problem as fjafferri

Any help will be useful.

My cpanel server works perfect for emails but my directadmin doesnt.
