How do files/folders need to be organised in file manager?

How am I supposed to know which folders/files need to go where in the file manager?
I had a simple 'site coming soon' design being displayed at the main domain, then I registered a sub domain and tried to upload (via expression web 2 ftp) and publish that, in order to show the web site to somebody, but while trying to get that done I somehow made a mess and now nothing displays anywhere and I have no idea how to fix it. Unfortunately I have no back ups.
So how is one supposed to know where to put what or is there a simple rule???

The file manager is simply a replacement for FTP.

Your site always exists at:

domains/EXAMPLE.COM/public_html/

where EXAMPLE.COM is your domain name.

The path:

public_html/

may or may not work on youyr site, depending on how your hosting company manages their server. You should ask them for help.

Subdomains created in DirectAdmin generally hold their contents in:

domains/EXAMPLE.COM/public_html/subdomain/
but again, help requests should go to your hosting company.
