hi, iv found on my server the correct file to access the stats in real time but when i try to dowload it on my website it gives me an eroor message .... p

my question is how can you set a real webcounter with reading your number of visitor through a page from a different file of your server ???

please hel p

Because this is a question and not a How-To, I'm moving it to the proper forum.

Jeff

the only thing i want to know is how to settle a good web counter that is free and which i can adapt anything from it ... can you please give me some advice

thanks !

I think that what you're asking for is someone tell you what they think is a good webcounter. But unless they know what you're looking for I don't see anyone risking a recommendation.

Have you tried googling "good webcounter" (without the quotes)?

I just did and got 257,000 hits. Surely you don't expect me to figure out which one will fit your unstated needs.

Or do you?

Jeff

my question is totally if there is a way with the server to access the stats from the directadmin and show it as a good wercounter .... and concering those 257 000 hits all of those are not bug free.....i did search a lot ...

the reason why i am asking you is that the last web server company i was with offer a webcounter for each of its members !

thanks again

As far as I know there is no serverwide webcounter. Webcounters are meant to be used on a single website. You could of course add a webcounter with the same id to all the sites and then you should have a combined counter for all websites.

If you want it integrated into DA it will be custom work and will cost money as I've not come accross anyone else with a similar wish. If you want the custom work done you can contact me and I'll see what can be done.

Just wanted to clarify that only JBMC has the source code to DA; any custom work by anyone else (I'm part owner of Edge Internet Services) will be as a plugin.

Onno, That is odd, surely you must remember me and my recent emails and PM's to you wanting a counter/stats program for all the virtual sites on my server? I have also posted about this several times over the past month.

Trader, were you asking about a stats program or a simple webcounter?

There's a big difference.

A webcounter works by updating a file each time a page is hit. Usually it's saved on a per-domain basis.

Jeff

Are not AWstats and Webalizer also "web-counters" with a difference being the hits/visits counter is not seen by the public on the webpage? Don't understand why anyone would want the public to see the counter anyway.

If the poster is running DA does that not normally include a free Webalizer (or other program) from most hosts so do not understand his request for help in getting a web counter since he likely already has it (unless I am missing something)?

Trader: You're right, I slipped up, there is 1 other person besides bozoemo that wanted serverwide stats

However as I read now the advice I gave was exactly the same.

Jeff: As you pointed out, custom work will never be inside the code of DA because we don't have it...

Bozoemo: I've never come accross a counter that reports 100% and I know there are several people who will claim otherwise. Fact is that I've tested several counters in the past for my own site (a new domain name and according to the logs then I was the only 1 accessing the site) and of 37 counters I had 32 different results and the ones that were the same were also not all giving the same results. 2 based on the server logs came close but even the ones based on the server logs were not 100% accurate. As this was a controlled test I knew how many times I accessed the site from how many IP's and how many pages I viewed from each IP and what the duration of the test was (14 days), everything was logged and comparred to the serverlogs (they were wrong, showed 3 pageviews less than I actually had) and the counters (all were wrong).

The choice is up to you and having a counter gives you great insight into what actually happens on your sites but don't expect it to reflect the truth 100%, maybe 99.99% would be closer to the truth.

Webalizer and AWStats fall into the category web-stats and not web-counter.

There are many reasons why people want thier stats to be seen, if you have a site that is visited by many people on a regular basis you could point potential advertisers to your stats page (for page-views per day and total, unique visitors per day, popular pages, etc) or your web-counter (for total pageviews).

Oh, now I get it. Thanks.

But then again you could simply make a screen shot of your AW or Webalizer stats and email the screen shot, which is more valuable to the prospective buyer than looking at a webpage counter. Since it may easily be manipulated and falsified, as routinely done by many website owners to exagerate the traffic.

I just saw one last night. The site owner said it was a new site a few days old and not in the SE yet but magically the free hit counter said 184,000 visits aleady. Also saw one with 2 million visits on an unknown simple 1 page website with a poor domain name the other day. LOL.
