IP and server management

I'm likely complicating things in my head, but I wanted to confirm here. Do IP addresses need to be added to the network interface manually, THEN add it inside the DA configuration using IP Management?

Is there a general list of things that DA doesn't touch and that must manually be managed prior to doing anything in DA?

A specific question I have is that there is a lot of existing documentation for IPv6 with DA, but they are several years old. I have configured AAAA records, and run a few IPv6 tests, and there seems to be nothing failing, even though I have not configured IPv6 in DA.conf (ipv6=1). What does ipv6=1 actually do these days?

To close on this issue, it seems like Bind works fine when you add AAAA records without setting ipv6=1 but Exim (and Dovecot?) don't work without ipv6=1 and building conf files again.
