Hello,

At this moment I’m trying out the mailing list option in DA. But I have a few question and I cannot find the answers to these questions.

Question1 :
Is it possible to load and control the lists and users of the mailing list outside of DirectAdmin?
Because I would like to use these lists in a CMS for a website if that is possible.
It would be a nice option in the CMS to control the users of the list and to select a list to send a mailing to.

Question 2:
To sign up for a mailing list you need to send an e-mail to [email protected], when you do this you receive 2 messages from the majordomo system. Can I turn this auto reply off? Because if a person wants to sign-up for a mailing list, these messages are not very user-friendly.
Or, can I design a own auto-reply message in HTML for majordomo to send?

Question 3:
To send a mailing to a list you need to send an email to [email protected] but everyone can send an email to this adres. How can I secure this option so that only 1 e-mail adres can send a email to the mailinglist?

I hope someone can help me with this, I cant find the answers on the internet.

Yes. Majordomo was written in much simpler times (the earliest printed documentation I've found for it is in my copy of a 1998 edition (over ten and a half years ago) of Managing Mailing Lists published by O'Reilly. There may have been older books documenting the use of Majordomo, but I don't have any. The most recent version of Majordomo is Version 1.94.5, released less than two years after that book was printed: Jan. 19, 2000.

Majordomo was designed to be managed entirely by sending emails. DirectAdmin manipulates the resulting files directly, and so can you. Documentation for Majordomo may be found at the Majordomo website, here.

The Wikipedia article on Majordomo can be found here.

Support for Majordomo may best be obtained on the Majordomo-Users mailing list. To subscribe send an email to: [email protected]

The body of the email should contain:
subscribe majordomo-users youremailaddress
Where youremailaddress should of course be replaced by your email address.

You can certainly do that, by manipulating files directly. See documentation and links above.

Yes, but be sure to use double-opt-in procedures to avoid being classified as a spammer. That's one of the reasons you get those mailings from Majordomo, but of course to avoid being classified as a spammer you really should use double-opt-in.

See links above. The da-announce list at daserversolutions.com is managed by Majordomo, and doesn't allow unmoderated posts from anyone except authorized email addresses. The key to that is the Restrict Post option. Documentation as in the links above.

And witch files should I be manipulating then? I can't find anny files of my server. I don't own my own server, I just have a normal hosting package.

I already searched at the MajorDomo website, but could not find this information.

Use mailman if you want more functionality :) You can find a working how-to on DirectAdmin forums :)

I'm not in the position to install someting on the server.
Isn't there a way to load al the list information via PHP?

MajorDomo is a server-wide solution and is very geek-oriented. If you need to run it without server access then the easy way to maintain the Restrict Post list is to name it in your DirectAdmin MajorDomo setup page for your list, and then create a new list with the same name as the Restrict Post name you just entered. Then you can use DirectAdmin to add email addresses to the new list; just add the email addresses you want to be able to post to your original list. Never make the new list public; it's just for you to add addresses manually for the purpose of restricting posts to the original list.

I've been about as clear as I can be; you do need the ability to create a second list. If you can't do it, or can't figure out how to do it, perhaps you can hire your hosting company to do it for you or to explain it for you; it's actually fairly simple.

Mailman is a lot less geeky but it still requires server-wide install. There are also many free and commercial php mailing list programs which are domain-based; you can find them through Google and can install one on your site.
