On my old host, I had a discussion mailinglist running with MailMan.

On my own server now, using DA, there's Majordomo.

And i've been searching the net and this forum for some hours now, not finding any helpfull tips.

What i'm trying to do is setting up an discussion mailing list with majordomo.

* Only subscribed members can mail TO the majordomo list, the list sends copy to al subscribed members.
* Noone can subscribe him/herself, only admin can.

Whe list I created now doesn't work this way :( ..

everyone can mail to the list, and it will send to the subscribers.
so spam could be sent to the list, or uninvited users.

we don't want that..

Does anyone knows how to do this?

Change the "Subscribe Policy" to "closed" so only the admin can subscribe or approve any members. And change "Restrict Post" to the name of your mailing list. For example, if your mailing list name was named football, then put the word football in that field. That field names the file that contains valid poster email addresses, and DA puts the subscribed email addresses in a file named after the list.

is there a help file that explains every setting of the mailing list panel in DA?

i used a mailing list where my posts returned to me, so i have the complete thread in my mail client... is there the possibility to set it?
thanks.

There isn't too much documentation from DA, but you can read the FAQ about majordomo here most of the setting in DA are listed in there.

And you can check out the sample list-owner-info file (of which listowners should always get a customized copy when their list is created) here.

Is it also possible to restrict posting to only 1 emailaddress?

As far as I can see in the FAQ this should be done with the restrict_post parameter but I'm a reseller with no root access.
Thanks,
GJ

The restrict_poster comes from "Restrict Post" section in DA. It just needs to point a file, the file can reside in your home directory and contain only the email address you want.

The correct answer is not to use a file as suggested previously. The right answer is to set up a second list for administrators who are allowed to post to your announcement list, for examle "[email protected]"

The reason is in shared-hosting situations (multiple web site accounts served from a single physical machine), the majordomo software may or may not be able to access a file in your home directory.

The setps you need to take are as follows:

On the "Modify Mailing List" page for your new "sysadmin" list set the "Restrict Post" to "sysadmin" (without the quotes). You should also set the subscribe options to closed, so no one can join your admin list.

Now on your announcement list (let's call it "[email protected]"), on the Modify Mailing List page for the "announce" list, set the "Restrict Post" to "sysadmin" (without the quotes).

The result is only people on your new "sysadmin@" list will be able to post to your "announce@" list.

Kind Regards,
JCR

In the case of DA that does work, because creating a new list (assuming the user is allowed more than one mailing list), will create a file in the domains majordomo directory with the list of users subcribed to the "sysadmin" list. Also make sure that the sysadmin list does not allow open subscribing.
