Decided to reinstall my VPS tonight. I've done MANY Direct Admin installs. Never a problem.
After backing up, I reimaged my vps to CentOS 7 and did the usual for install.

Install gets all the way to here:
"
.c -o ext/fileinfo/libmagic/apprentice.lo
virtual memory exhausted: Cannot allocate memory
make: *** [ext/fileinfo/libmagic/apprentice.lo] Error 1
Changed secure_php option from no to yes
PHP has been secured.
Job for httpd.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status httpd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

"
And then quits.
I can assure you, Virtual Memory is not exhausted. Have 512 mb virtual memory, only about 50 mb was in use, only about 100 out of the 256 mb ram was in use.
Tried again, instead of auto, did the regular install. Same result. Re-Imaged the VPS again, same result. Went down a version, back to CentOS 6, which is what the VPS was on before I re-installed. Same exact result.
I'd try CentOS 8 but my provider does not offer that yet.

The error log it said to see has the following:

[root@pbji0s41ho var]# systemctl status httpd.service

What should have been a 2-hour start to finish project is going on 8 hours of screwing around. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get DA installed and my sites back up and running?

THANK YOU!

I know you said that not all memory was used, but still think that is your problem. 256 MB RAM is not much. Please see https://directadmin.com/install.php where it says: "minimum 1 GB of memory is required", and "at least 2 GB of swap memory".

Also please note that for CentOS 8 you need minimum 2 GB of memory, but 4 GB preferred: https://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS8.1905#Install_Media

At least 2 GB RAM are required to install and use CentOS-8 (1905). At least 4 GB RAM is recommended.

I'm attempting to run CentOS 6 ad CentOS 7. It was a working functional server with DA until I reinstalled. I'm attempting to get a temporary ram upgrade until I get it installed again, and will give that a try. Hopefully, it works. The company I have my VPS with discontinued VPS services, but kept the legacy customers, and doesn't do upgrades on accounts anymore. I am moving to a dedicated or colo server hopefully around May. So I just need this to hold out until then.

Made "Some" progress. Did another clean CentOS 6 install.

Got this far;
make: *** [ext/fileinfo/libmagic/apprentice.lo] Error 1
Stopping crond: [ OK ]
Starting crond: [ OK ]
Changed secure_php option from no to yes
PHP has been secured.
httpd: Syntax error on line 213 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 23 of /etc/httpd/conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/ips.conf: No such file or directory

And thats where it quit this time. This isn't making any sense :-(

No swap or memory issues this time.
