I believe there should be a mandatory readme post of some sort so that new forum users know that if they give us fake information like example.com that likely we will not be able to help them and may not even respond to them. It is extremely frustrating to research a dns problem only to find out that the information that was provided was fake or "just and example."

There are probably other things people should know about as well before they start posting and asking questions. Most of the questions I see here are already answered either in this forum or the knowledgebase.

You make a good point, but the place to take it up would be with the authors of vBulletin.

I suppose the information could be put into the Password email, but I don't know if that can be modified, nor do I think anyone would even read it if it were there.

Or in the Terms of Service.

The best personal action to take on those posts that violate what you think are the rules, is to simply ignore them.

I'm not so lucky; I make it a point to read every post.

Even the spam ones you don't see.

Its a shame because I think if some guidelines were posted AND people actually read them they would find their answers a lot faster. I know I rarely have to ask a question, not because I am so smart, but because I know how to search for the answer in this forum and in the knowledgebase. But as you say people would probably not read it anyway.

I'm going to look into whether something is doable.

But I doubt people who don't already know enough to to use forums properly will bother to read anything they get as part of the signon process.

1% will read if that. Most people do not read things like that. We could put example.com in the banned words though :P

I don't know how the banned words work but it would be great is they tried to use example.com or domain.com a message would come up telling them to use their real domain name. Also maybe the same for ip addresses xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

No, because I use example.com when I create generic examples. So do a lot of other posters. In fact that's why the domain is reserved. So you can.

Maybe just a javascript warning where you can confirm or not. The warning could state that its best to use real information but it would not prevent you from actually using it.

I guess that would have to be taken up with vBulletin. We can dream can't we?

Could hack an onclick event with vb but it would be annoying having that with every single post we make :)

It would not be with every single post. Only when posting certain words.

Why not just ignore the posts you don't like. Eventually I'll find it (I read every post) and send them the now infamous link I use to let lusers know what they're doing wrong.

And to the uninitiated, a luser is NOT (necessarily) a loser. A luser is simply a linux user. Well, not so simply, if you're a BOFH. As Geppetto might have said to Pinocchio, "even if the shoe doesn't fit, wear it" :D.
