MariaDB 11.4 Almalinux 8 vs. Almalinux 9

Does DirectAdmin install MariaDB 11.4 differently on Almalinux 9 than it does on Almalinux 8?

I only have one Almalinux 9 server at the moment, so I can't do my own comparison.

But on Almalinux 8, it looks like DirectAdmin installs MariaDB from RPMs:

# rpm -qa | grep -i maria
MariaDB-shared-11.4.12-1.el8.x86_64
MariaDB-server-11.4.12-1.el8.x86_64
MariaDB-common-11.4.12-1.el8.x86_64
MariaDB-devel-11.4.12-1.el8.x86_64
MariaDB-backup-11.4.12-1.el8.x86_64
MariaDB-client-11.4.12-1.el8.x86_64

But on Almalinux 9, I get:

# rpm -qa | grep -i maria
mariadb-connector-c-config-3.2.6-1.el9_0.noarch

Is DirectAdmin compiling MariaDB 11.4 on Almalinux 9? Is it suppose to be?
 
No, DA does not install MariaDB RPM packages on AlmaLinux 9.X OS. It complies/builds it from the source, like:

The utf8 charset does not work on the Almalinux 9 MariaDB 11.4 (can't be certain of other MariaDB versions) the same as it does on Almalinux 8.

The query (which apparently I can't post because of reasons):

will work on Almalinux 8 MariaDB 11.4 - which is installed with the RPM?

But will not work on Almalinux 9 MariaDB 11.4 - which is installed some other way?

This would appear to have ramifications in how Softaculous functions.

I've been beating my head for about a week trying to figure this out. And finally came to the conclusion that MariaDB 11.4 on Almalinux 8 isn't the same as MariaDB 11.4 on Almalinux 9.

Now, I don't know specifically who is at "fault" here. I just know that a query that works on Almalinux 8 does not appear to work on Almalinux 9. I'm equally perplexed that this hasn't been discovered yet. How long has Almalinux 9 been a supported OS for DirectAdmin? Nobody uses Softaculous on DirectAdmin installed on Almalinux 9? Nobody has tried to install WordPress through Softaculous on DirectAdmin installed on Almalinux 9?
 
mariadb-11.4.12-linux-systemd-x86_64.tar.gz has a precompiled universal binary inside. If there are such differences, it must be built using a different configuration than the RPM one.
 
I suppose my question is: Is there a particular reason why DirectAdmin on Almalinux 9 is using mariadb-11.4.12-linux-systemd-x86_64.tar.gz instead of the RPMs at https://mirror.mariadb.org/yum/11.4/rhel/9/x86_64/rpms - as @zEitEr has alluded to?

Still perplexed that Almalinux 9 has been allowed to reach version 9.8 and nobody else has ever seen this issue?

This may also have ramifications with migrating accounts that were on Almalinux 8 (where the utf8 charset is allowed in MariaDB) to Almalinux 9 (where apparently utf8 charset is not allowed). Or any server where MariaDB is allowed to use the utf8 charset. This would seem to affect a great number of WordPress sites.

Has anybody else using MariaDB 11.4 on Almalinux 9 - or any system - been able to duplicate these findings? Do I have something else misconfigured?

Is my confusion misplaced in that this would seemingly seem to be a gross deficiency, yet there's not really any concern?
