Hey All,

Hoping someone can help me out as I have run into a minor issue with the setup that Jeff aka NoBaloney was running for his DNS and I am trying to find a way to switch over to something a lot less confusing without breaking anything in the process.

Recently after I moved a client off a dedicated server and onto a shared server (I moved his IPs as well) I started getting error messages about duplicates in the Master/Slave setup

I was considering setting the servers into the multi server setup in the hope I could maybe do away with the external DNS servers

Any thoughts/ideas????

Well i would suggest you to switch to DirectSlave, i did the same many years ago and Jeff told me long time ago he was going to switch aswell, he was just afraid of the work and of the posible issues.

The master2slave script was a little confusing, you will need to work on it a bit to remove all the custom scripts and implement DS with DA Multiserver function.

If all servers have Directadmin on it, I would suggest to use the DA multiserver setup. This is the easiest to setup and configure, without having to make changes to /etc/named.conf and install third party things. In fact /etc/named.conf can be set to original again.
It's really the most easy way to have multiple DNS servers when you have DA running.

However, I presume some master2slave settings need to be removed from there.

Directslave is ideal if you got one server with DA and another server or vps where DA is not running on.

Since Jeff was using master2slave it is probably a non-DA Server, since there was no reason at all to use master2slave with MultiServer Setup on two DA Servers ;)

Regards

Correct, I was thinking about that too. That's why I wrote both possibilities in my answer.

Why both possibilities?

This statement gave me the impression that Neil is thinking of getting rid of the non-DA servers.
If that's the case, there is also no reason to even change to Directslave.;)

That is exactly what I am thinking at this point as I am trying to reduce my headaches. In addition to running my operation which I will probably fold over into Jeff's once all of the dust has settled, I also run tech support at a datacenter in Los Angeles and that keeps me hopping as well with support tickets and server orders. Needless to say my plate is very full and anything I can do to simplify things makes me a whole lot more productive.

As said.... If you're running DA servers, best option is to use DA's own multiserver setup. Least amount of work.
