Migrate license to another server

The forum is a community forum, not always visited by DA. As said, might be best to send a mail to sales@ to get help on this.

After contacting sales this is the answer

Hello,
For licenses out of support, we ask that you purchase a license for the time you need. This will also help support the DirectAdmin project and allow us to provide updates for all these lifetime licenses.
Thanks!

So in case someone stumble upon here this is official method for current lifetime licenses. You have to buy new license for one month and after migration migrate your own license to new server and cancel new one you bought for migration purposes.

This is really new and in contrary of what @DirectAdmin Sales stated before here in the threads about it. They did not mention that lifetime licenses should now pay a month license. I do understand where they are coming from and it seems fair to me too.
But then they should not make statements about getting a trial license for free, because that adds to confusion.

They should have been more clear in their statements that this method is not good anymore for lifetime licenses.

Anyway, thank you for checking and reporting back.

I apologize for mentioning a free workaround to buying a short-term migration license. It wasn't meant to cause confusion. We will move towards more consistency even if this means removing free options.

Maybe it will be better to simply scrap the trial license entirely as it seems to be used for everything but evaluating DA. Also it doesn't have Pro Pack features so it's not even a good demo of modern DA. There is also frustration on the end-user side as they can't get any tech support on it, and frustration on our side from denying support tickets on these licenses.

I think buying the license, getting Pro Pack features, and getting support would solve all these problems. And if the evaluation is negative, it's still a free license due to our money-back policy. :)

I think we are really talking about 2 different things which has always been confusing.

First: I think you need a Trial license for people who want to test your system and it should include all the features you ever plan to sell to the person. If it doesn't then its not a good sales tool. I don't think they would need support. If they do it is one of 2 problems. The installer script needs more work so it is fool proof OR the user isn't really an admin type. You should not even build them in the support portal.

Second: Migrate license or temp license. A current client should not need a Trial licenses to do a server migration. Its a waste of everyones time to create a secondary account to do a migration. We all need a way to build a new server replace the old server. This requires 2 licenses. If I am just changing to a new server there is no reason to buy a separate license. There needs to be a way to issue a temp licence for a few hours so one can migrate to the new server.

That could be a good thing. However, server moves will always be present, so a good permanent solution to easily do that would be very much appreciated.

I don't think that lifetime license users will have an issue buying a monthly license for 1 month, which also supports the DA development.

However, there are also the modern customers which will at a certain moment have to transfer/move their server and need a little bit of time (for example a week) to be able to manage both systems (make backups, change DNS settings, transfer accounts partly).

So it would not be quite good if they change their license and then the old server instantly stops being accessible and only backups can be made.

Also compared to the competition, a good transfer option should be available somehow in which both servers would be working for a short time period. So especially for server transfers/moves.

for a few hours so one can migrate
Some of us really need a bit more than a few hours to setup a new server, configure it and migrate all stuff.

You should in a very very easy way have the possibility to move your license's and servers.

If you use for example license to test things you often move to other locations, hosters or ip's is only one example.

if using for lot of (parked) domains, then license for one month hmm.

MUCH MUCH better solution could be a one time payment including some support for moving / migrate license.
There two or even three options / prices , one for DIY migration (so the more only administrative costs), one with some support and one Migration done by DA.

Then the time needed is not important then also. ( you could set a max time ofcourse which can be extended against costs)

Give licence keys a kind of extension to identify ( migrations) you can have 2 installs active on 1 license key for .. period of time , or kind off a longer countdown time to become "inactive" license that is on the (old) box

So made the license key ( keeping the same twice) only one key and have it automaticly changed to non migration after period of time , so you don't need extra sssss for registrations and inputs in systems as Clients. ( less useless time needed for administrative and also admin stuff then)

I would not want to buy something that I shouldn't have to buy. AKA I have a license if I am transferring it to another server. I just need a migration temp license.

This feature request is out there. Very much needed.

Oh sure.. take 8 if you need it.

Only if DA does all the work. Again I don't want to buy something I don't need.

I understand, both sides. Because we still benefit from those licenses, so paying a small amount such few time we transfer server, to support the development would do not harm either.

So there is something to say for both arguments. I'm sure the DA guys will find a good solution to handle transfers.

The one time fee , could be fair, because of some administration work i mean. or even a kindly tool that helps to have less work fo both party's

I mean for example take, register a whatever extra license to transfer migrate costs both time Da and Us. and so money.

So if there is a tool that safes time, for both i agree one time (small) fee should be ok.
And if DA supports more ( do some work or extra support as in Pro) then extra higher fee.
