hello,
I am considering moving my server's slowly over the next few month's and deadlining the devices that currently are running my DA server. While this is NOT critical, this is something i forsee in the coming future.

My question is multi folded, so here's in hopes i can get some feedback.

My current server is in the midwest and i am putting a new one up in the southwest where i live now. ( hey cannot pass on unlimited free bandwith and rack space! )

I have around 40 sites on my server, and want to use the "multi server setup" for DA. Is this going to balance the load per say ?

Obviously their will be the usual "mail box moves, etc..." but I would like to not have to do that if possible.

Is their a way to bakcup DA, and "restore" to the new location.

Obviously thier will be some DNS moving that has to take place, but that will be minimal.

Has anyone done a move on servers like this before ??? Or am i meerly dreaming of a nightmare ?

thanks,
rob

The multi server functionality only has DNS and does not load balancing.

Doing reseller backup and restores is the recommended way to transfer users from one server to the other.
About the only thing you will have to worry about doing it through the reseller levels is making sure your clients domains nameservers get updated for the nameservers you are going to be using on the new server.

I didn't think it would do the full site / e-mail etc... but figured it would do DNS.

Since that is the case, and what you mentioned...

How does the "recovery process" work on DA? If i do a full backup / recovery per say from server to server will i encoutner any major difficulties other than some off the wall stuff ?

Most my sites are pretty much e-mail only, or some have basic web pages there, while a few have some PHP.

Is this going to be a mess ?

Hi Rob,

We moved servers from the US to the UK a while back with almost no downtime.

(actually just a little mysql downtime)

We set up the new server exactly the same as the old one, then copied all sites across reseller account by reseller account - then copied the mysql across again and stopped mysql on the old server.

Then copies all the zone files from the new server onto the old server so all IP's on the old server pointed to the new server.

Then switched mysql, exim etc off on the old server.

Then after thorough checking just changed the IP's on the DNS at the registrar - actually this made no difference as the sites were running off the new server BEFORE the dns IP's were changed, but if it had gone horribly wrong then we could have just copied the old zone files back and turned on the services again.

Hope this helps,

Rob
