Hello,
i have a problem i would like to hear how would you do it. i have one user that has a social network that is sucking out server capacity. So i need to transfer him from shared server to dedicated server, on both is installed apache and direct admin. How will you transfer the whole web site without having site down?

You'll have to have some downtime while you're backing up and restoring the site.

If you're not using the same IP# on both servers then you should first change the TTL on the site for approximately 600 seconds (ten minutes). Then wait at least as long as the value of the previous TTL.

Then shut down the site on the shared server, use the reseller level backup to backup the site on the shared server, and move the backup to the new server.

Then install the backup under the reseller on the new server, and restore it from that reseller (probably the admin's reseller level).

Then point DNS records (in the zone file at the old server) to the IP# of the site on the new server (if necessary), and change the nameservers (if necessary) at your registrar, and then unsuspend the site on the new server.

Be sure to test your results.

Jeff

And while the site is suspended on the old server you can post for a message for that domain that says the site is being transfer and check back later. That way it doesn't say suspended but let people know it will be back online soon.

But you have to suspended the site so that nothing changes while it is being moved.
