Hello !

I have a second server MX, to be sure that if the local server is down, emails shouldn't be lost.

Adress (by example) : mx2.domaine2.com
mx2.domaine2.com is on other server.

On my main server, in dns i have this :

imap A XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
mail A XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
pop A XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
smtp A XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

mail MX 10

and I add :

mx2.domaine2.com MX 20

Is it the good configuration ?

Other question, if my main server is down. If someone tries to connect to mail.domain.com, that shoudn't work, exact ? Even if i have a second mail server. How to configure dns to make possible to have mails if main server is down ?

Thanks

Don't forget the "." after the "com".

You can configure DNS to let senders know you have a second mailserver.

But you can't easily receive email if the server is down; to do so you'd have to set up duplicate email accounts on the second mailserver, and somehow direct all your clients to read email from the second server whenever the first is down.

Doing only the DNS is only part of the equation. If you haven't set up accounts for the domain on the second server and figured out how to send your users to the second server you can't deliver email while the first server is down.

About the best you can do is set tell the world to ask the second server to hold mail until the first server is back up again, and then send the mail to the first server.

And that requires additional configuration to the second server which is beyond the scope of standard DA configuration and in most cases standard exim configuration.
