I have a customer who wishes to use his mail server as the primary location for mail, which is not the DA managed server. The DNS and MX records are on a Direct Admin machine, but his mail server has a fixed IP address only and no domain associated with it.

In Direct Admin can I replace the MX record with a new one using the IP address 81.174.xxx.xxx and the priority of 10

Do I need to create a A record to resolve the IP to say mail2.hyperbxxar.com or is this not necessary.

can it all be done via the control panel?

many thanks

MX must resolve to a fqdn, and NOT to an IP#.

Yes, you can do it under the control panel.

If you use an IP address instead of a hostname as an MX things will break.

Why don't you simply create a sub-domain for the client's mail server and use that?
eg. mx.clientsdomain.tld
