I've always been able to use the nameserver of the webhost I was using. Now I have upgraded to a VPS and apparently need to setup my own nameservers?

Can someone point me to some resources that might assist with this? I've read 2-3 posts that are along the similar lines of what I need to do but none of them have had quite enough information for me to put all the pieces together.

For what its worth this is what my host says about nameservers. I'd rather not open a ticket everytime I have a new domain, so I'd prefer the option of setting up my own nameservers. My registrar is 1and1. I have plenty of IP's to use.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Now you're managing a server, so you've got learn to be a systems administrator.

First you need to register the nameservers with the registrart where your domain is registered.

Second you need (as reseller) to set up virtual nameservers for those nameservers.

Then you need to use them :) .

Look here.

Thanks ;-). I eventually figured it out, though that resource might have been helpful. What I did was a little different then described, but appears to be working.

What I did:
1) Went to 1and1.com and logged in, clicking on the "Manage Domains" link.
2) Clicked on New->Create Subdomain, and entered ns1.mydomain.com. Then clicked okay. (Repeated for ns2)
3) Checked the box next to ns1.mydomain.com and clicked the DNS button.
4) Put in one of my IP addresses for ns1, and saved. (repeated for ns2).
5) Changed my domains to point to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com

6) Logged into direct admin and clicked on DNS administration.
7) Created an A record for ns1 pointing to the IP set in step 4 (repeated for ns2)

8) Changed all the ns Domain entries from all of my domains to point to the ns1 and ns2 (They had been pointing to my prior hosts nameservers).

8) Went to Extra Features->Administrator Settings and verified that ns1 and ns2 were set properly as the nameservers.

9) Waited... Waited.... Waited...

10) Verified settings were set right and everything worked ;-)

Setting them as nameservers is NOT the same as creating nameservers. So you may or may not have problems in the future.

Without knowing your nameserver names it's impossible to check.

ns1.dlogan.net and ns2.dlogan.net are my nameservers.

So far everything seems to be working (with multiple domains). What might happen in the future?

Your nameservers are properly registered in the root servers; they'll be fine.

Jeff

Hi jlasman,

I couldn't help but ask: How did you manage to verify that the nameservers are properly registered in the root servers?

Cheers,
Theo.
