No clue about mail que

Hi there,
I've had a problem with dovecot, the service stopped and could not be restarted. After a reboot from the server the service is running again but there is no mail passing. Can anyone tell me how to see if the mail is flowing or can be forced to get going again?
FYI i'm an absolute beginner with no experiance what so ever.

Because the service (dovecot) could not be manualy stopped or started (it didn't react to anything) I restarted the server and after that the problem has been solved.
