problem with squirrelmail

Hello, I have a problem with squirrelmail:

/var/www/html/squirrelmail/data/[email protected] The preferences file could not be copied from the temporary file /var/www/html/squirrelmail/data/[email protected]. Contact your system administrator to resolve this error to solve.

I know this thread is old but I just had it happen to me on one domain.
Logging in and going to the "data" directory for squirrelmail and "chmod"ing the <domain name>.pref file solved the squirrelmail login error. I sent a test message to verify that it was receiving email again and it failed to come in, but Exim did not generate any error in the log file. Stopping and restarting the "dovecot" process solved my problem and now that domain's email accounts are receiving new email again. I don't know why the .pref file's permissions got foobar-ed (been ok for several years) but it definitely was a permission denied error preventing the normal operation of Exim/Dovecot for that domain's email.
