Problems with vm-pop3d

Firstly, if I try to get mail from my Palm and there *are* messages to retrieve, my Palm hangs and I'm locked out of that account (from *any* client). I have to restart vm-pop3d to get into my mail.

Second, I can't see what's going wrong because either I don't know where the log files are for vm-pop3d or it's not logging anything ( /var/log/maillog ) and I can't figure out where to look for configuration problems.. Where's the vm-pop3d.conf and logs at?

Lastly, why is there a "special" DA vm-pop3d. Won't the official one suffice?

The special vm-pop3d is probably there so pop knows how to log into virtual users.

I've got over 10,000 posts in this forum. Most of them helpful to at least someone. I really don't need any more of what you call a sigPost.

Yeah, I did search before posting.. I also Googled but I'm kinda new to all this so most of it goes over my head.

Dovecot looks promising but the 1-way deal is a bit troubling. I've never ever had a problem with my Palm downloading messages from any other server except the one I'm on now.

Do you know if the DA build dovecot script will work right out of the box with no hiccups?

Yes it was very constructive to your last question. Jeff has probably forgotten more than a lot of us will ever know.
 
Wow... At first I got worried because the build script had a hiccup when it tried to start dovecot (said address was already in use).. Went into DA and restarted it and now my mail checking (many accounts) is like - instantaneous :-) Palm has no problem downloading messages either! Thanks very much!
 
Floyd, I can't please everyone. When I don't know the answer and don't take time out of my already busy life to look it up, and I don't answer ... well you see what happens.

And if I'd answer by saying Try Dovecot someone would probably complain about that too.

I'm very happy with Dovecot.

I've got it on all of our servers (not all of our client servers, though), except one, where we don't have enough space in home.

Two issues to remember about Dovecot...

1) The DA Dovecot installation puts all it's email in /home; make sure you have enough space there.

2) Some server installs (ours by defualt) set up quotas in /home and in no other partitions; you may find that your users fill up their space and can't receive email anymore, if they don't watch their email usage. Had I known this in advance I would have reconsidered some of our allowed space usage for some of our clients, and brought it to everyone's attention first.

We're very happy with Dovecot.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm all alone on a VPS here so things are good :-) I'll definitely keep it in mind though.
 
Looking at what Jeff has mentioned about space and the quota system, please advise on something... after the switch to Dovecot, "IF" you change the client's default account size in the DA panel, will this also relect in the system quota? Assuming that quotas are turned on?

I hope that wasn't TOO obvious of a question! Hey, I am still learning about all of the wonderful world of Linux... even at my slightly more than middle age :p
 
Yes, changing the quota should reflect in the system quota. It does for me.

I wouldn't consider it too obvous a question.

But I'll point out that rather than wait sometimes days for an answer, you can easily check this sort of thing yourself. Change it in DA, then look at it with:

# quota <username>
where <username> should be replaced by the username you're checking (or is that too obvious :) )?

Heh... not for me my friend... I am abit dense now and then. I try to make mental (and paper) notes of these types of things. Many times we find ourselves learning from our mistakes because we misunderstood some post... or didn't realize how one command might react with DA and how it is setup, etc. Soooooo, it is nice to have folks on the forum to take time and help us to understand the concepts better.

kudos to you all who help in this fashion!
