Hello all,

For any domain that I pull email from off directadmin, I get two instead of just the one. Any ideas what could cause that?

Thanks

What email client are you using? Do you have it set to leave mail on the server?

How many copies of each mail do you see when you use webmail before downloading? squirrelmail?

Hi,

I think I've found the source of this problem. If you have your mail client to leave mail on the server after downloading it via POP, and then you use Squirrelmail to check your mail, you'll receive the emails again via POP when you next open your email client.

It seems like an incompatibility between IMAP and POP - does anyone know these protocols intimately enough to know what's causing this?

Many thanks,
Matt :)

I don't believe you can do anything about it except not use an IMAP webmail program and a POP program on your local system.

Based on what others have written, running an IMAP program against the mailstore resets the headers so that your POP client will not know it's already downloaded the email prevously, and will download it again.

I am curious if anyone else is seeing the duplicate email problem. We are getting duplicate emails (and sometimes the same email many times). We are not using IMAP or webmail at all. It is very sporadic so I can't really pinpoint when exactly it happens.

Outlook and Thunderbird are set to leave mail on the server for 7 days. That is what we have here in the office. A client is using Exchange to pull down their email and they are seeing the same problem.

FreeBSD 5.4 w/ fresh DA install

Any ideas?

It could be the UIDL problem. I posted some changes for the POP3 server in another thread. If you do a search for UIDL you will find the patch for the server. Make sure to grab the last one posted, it is the most complete. Of course, if you aren't using IMAP, I don't know why you would be seeing that, but my changes shouldn't hurt, they just use the static part of the message to generate the UIDL, and have some code to prevent the IMAP record from being downloaded everytime it is updated.

I would like to bump this thread on account some of our users are experiencing duplicate emails. It's not all the emails, but it's always the same ones. For example, one of our clients has received his outlook test welcome message (that is sent when testing the connection settings in outlook 2003) 10 times in the past hour. This might be taken as being annoying.

I know Outlook will send duplicate emails. I have some friends using Outlook and have gotten duplicate emails from them several times and it never went through a DA server at all. It has nothing to do with DA or the server but everything to do with Outlook (not Outlook Express).

It's not the sending bit, it's the receiving bit I am worried about here. His client is not sending anymore testing messages, but he is receiving them.

His client is not sending anymore testing messages

How do you know? Are you there? Are you checking the packets going out from his computer?

My point is that you don't know anything for sure.

I am telling you that I have seen this happen before with stupid Outlook.

The only way for you to know anything for sure is to ssh into the server and check the mail logs and the mail file.

If you empty the mail file and then another test email appears then Outlook is sending another test message. You will also see multiple emails in the log file.

Also get him to check his Outbox in Outlook. The test message is probably stuck in there. This a common Outlook problem.
