I dont think this is a support request, but if you go in as an Admin or Reseller to view a clients data (CMD_SHOW_USER?user=blah), go to "Resend Welcome E-Mail", and DONT select "reset password" the password is not sent out to the email address.

Only a "reset" will send out a password.

Is this by design?

I can't speak on behalf of the DA team, but i guess this is because the passwords are encrypted(at least for mail/ftp), and not are stored in plain text.

Sorry, yes, i did know that the password is encrypted, by question is why is the option available if the password cannot be retrieved?

Because it isn't a "Resend password" function but a "Resend Welcome Email".
The Welcome Email contains alot of useful information for a customer (like the login url to DA), and when a customer calls/writes and ask for the information, the easiest way is to resend that email, but that doesn't mean the user wants a new password :)

Hmmmm, yes, one of the other guys here mentioned that too.

However, until recently DirectADmin had no "Resend" or "Reset" password available to it explicity.

Have you actually used that "resend welcome email" for anything other than resetting passwords? I can honestly say with about 10 DA servers we just have never used it for anything else, in three years! :)

I haven't used the feature in DA, but i've been working for another hosting company that had the same feautre in their own coded system. And it happens (not often but it happens), that people loose the original email and wants a copy of it. And when people calls, asking for pop3/login url to administration (even if its written in the FAQ) we normally asked if they wanted a copy of the welcome email sent, almost all say yes.

When sending it out you can always have it generate a new random password :)
Maybe there needs to be a feature that just emails users a new random password instead of the entire welcome letter.

DirectAdmin can't retrieve passwords because Linux and Unix don't store them in any retrievable fashion; the encoding is one-way.

We've rewritten the welcome email to be more of an "information" email; that way we can resend it at any time. Our clients know that we can't retrieve their passwords; if they want us to reset it we go ahead and check to send the new random password. Otherwise if they have the password and just want the information resent (yes, we do occasionally get asked for this) we send it to them without the checkmark.

drazhar, it's been a long time since DA didn't have "Reset Password" function; and it's always had a "Resend Welcome Email" function.

I simply set my system up to send a copy of the welcome email to one of my email addresses....so if the user wants the password, I simply send them a copy of the opriginal mail.

It's also quite handy when the user insists that something is busted....many times they don;t use the correct password.

Works fine unless they've changed it. Or you have for some reason, and forgotten to send another copy of the email.

Don't get me wrong, we get copies as well; we just don't depend on them :).

Hi,I'm a new user of Directadmin, in France...

Well, this is not comfortable for an hosting company, to keep somewhere all the welcome mail of all it's customers :(

And what happend if one customer change it's pass ? The datas stocked will be wrong, isn't it ?....

An other point : In the welcome mail, there is not any information regarding the Mysql DB : Name, user, pass. And no way to retrieve it on the panel.

is there any solution ? now or in future release ?

Best regards

If you don't feel comfortable keeping copies of your welcome emails, you can simply delete them; with most MUAs you can even filter them to /dev/null.

I believe it's important to get them so I get an idea of what's going on with my servers but your mileage may vary.

You can edit the welcome email to include anything you want; search these forums for more information.
