I'm looking for opinions regarding user preferences regarding; roundcube vs. uebimiau vs. squirrelmail.

Please submit your preference in my poll. Any elaborations as to why (administration vs. user comments)

Thanks.

I haven't voted in the poll because I may be in the midst of changing my mind.

I haven't used UebiMiau (I guess it's named based on how it would sound if webmail was pronounced by a common housecat) since DirectAdmin offered Squirrelmail as a choice, because UebiMiau, as installed by DirectAdmin, uses POP rather than IMAP, and therefore uses it's own non-standard protocol for adding folders. If you create folders under UebiMiau, you can't see them under any IMAP program; if you use any of the other webmail solutions you can.

I switched to Squirrelmail when it became available and I've stuck with it because it's mature and stable, and appears to be generally secure.

However in the recent past as RoundCube has matured and has had a (recently) good security record, I've been thinking of moving to RoundCube as a default because it has a better look and feel.

I'd like to see comments from others as well.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff. Good information, especially;

I too have used SquirrelMail for a number of years. A lot of useful plugins are available. I use it on a server that I am shutting down. In fact I bought templates from NutsMail (www.nutsmail.com) a few years ago. They have been well received by my users.

I am new to Roundcube and UebiMiau. I kinda like the feel of Roundcube and am interested in opinions of others, such as yours.

Thanks again.

I have voted for RoundCube, and I am using it as the default webmail for my customers because of the "look and feel". I hated the other alternatives, because I think they all looked like crap.

Roundcube has the best Hebrew support, as many of my clients are from Israel, that made us switch it to the default one.

roundcube vs uebimiau vs squirrelmail

Its great and installation was quite easy, however the database requirement knocks it down a notch or two against, say, squirrelmail which has basically no additional dependencies. Its also less featureful than squirrelmail, altough its understandable for such a new software. I agree roundcube holds great promise and I have a roundcube installation for bold users to try, but for everyday use I still keep squirrelmail around. It leads to less "wheres this feature?" questions.

Thanks faxExelve.

I like featureless for users who confuse easy. A problem I found though, is I moved a user from a box that had Squirrelmail to a box where I'm using Roundcube.

The user had a bunch of contacts in the Squirrelmail address book, which I saved for her (mom), via cvs (only option). To import them to the Roundcube address book required converting them to vCard (only option) and upload them one at a time. This was a bit of a dissappointment.

Cheers.

Because of this we are thinking about disabling the UebiMiau webmail and moving the /webmail link to RoundCube or Atmail.

Any more comments / tips / differences on one of these webmail applications?

My users like roundcube once they get over the fact that the address import book is VERY limited.

Roundcube will only import addresses in a vCard format, ONE vCard at a time.

I was not too popular after migrating to Roundcube for this reason.

The vCard format allows multiple contacts within the same file. Just run "cat *.vcf > all.vcf" (merges all .vcf files in one) and import "all.vcf".
I've not tested this on RoundCube, but it works with all applications I've seen until now and since there is a checkbox that states "Replace the entire address book", I guess it follows the correct behaviour.

And if you have contacts in any format which is not vCard (like CSV)... well, that means you don't have the appropriated format for contacts, because they are all proprietary (columns are arbitrary and have arbitrary names). Find a way to export in vCard format from the old system or to convert the data before importing.

My problem came from migrating several domains to a new server. The old server used SquirrelMail, which allowed users to export address book only to a CSV file.

The new server, I elected to use Roundcube as the default webmail app.

I did not attempt to convert their address books, but rather told them to back them up using the SquirrelMail export feature ASSuming that they could easily import to Roundcube.

When it came time to upload to the new server, grrrr.

Problem is behind me now.

Alternative webmail

Hi, i use Vteddy. It's a new open source webmail client, which allows you to configure the notifications, permits and visibility of your mails. It has also a lot of functions, such as Calendar, Contacts, Reports and Recycle bin.

Hi, i use Vteddy.
I'd like to add a little warning: the VTEDDY project has less than a month and it seems to be a single person operation. It also offers a very large spectrum of functionalities but has no security changelog. It's clearly a very interesting project, but it seems very far from being ready for production use.
Also, this thread was 5 years old. Is this spam? :)

No, tillo. I've discovered it at job and I think it works very well. It isn't a single person operation, it's a derivative of VTECRM, that is a software for business management, but Vteddy is focussed on mail organization and office jobs, just take a look at vteddy[.]com. It isn't spam, i only wanted to say my opinion hoping it would be helpful for someone.

Alright then, my fault! I guess I jumped to a wrong conclusion after seeing the emptiness of the forum and the wiki edited by a single account.
The fact remains that there is no security changelog, there is no versioning at all to say the truth.
I hope the project grows well and reaches maturity.
