Hello All,

I've just purchased a server with the following specifications:

Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz LGA775 Processor
1024MB DDR2 533 RAM
Seagate 80GB HDD Serial ATA
Intel D915GEVL Mainboard
Foxconn Case with PSU

and am seeking some advice on setting it up.

Firstly, what operating system do you recommend. I've heard CentOS is quite good but it is not listed as being supported by DA.

Secondly, my programmer has requested php5 and mysql5 be installed - will this cause problems with DA? and is there a DA distribution which installs 5 instead of 4?

Lastly, I'll be setting up the server at home before sending it off to the colocation facility - how would that work in regards to DA licensing - obviously the IP addresses would be different?

Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

You must make sure the server is connected directly to the internet from home. You can't be behind a network.
You'll need to contact DirectAdmin and get the IP in you license changed for the new one when you send it off to the datacenter.

I recommend installing whatever operating system you are most comfortable with that DA supports.
CentOS and Debian are available besides what's listed on the website, although they are classified as beta.

You can install php4 and MySQL4 are installed by default, however after installation, you can manually upgrade and maintain the newer versions.

I'll have to get in touch with John and Mark about whether or not CentOS should be considered beta, since the code base and the directory structure are the same as RedHat Enterprise Linux.

We've been using it and installing since CentOS 3.

Thanks guys.

Got DA installed on the server and its working great :)

CentOS was supported as RH Enterprise in the license registration.

John has pointed out to me that CentOS is NOT listed as in beta.

I've pointed out to him that it's not listed at all.

Let's see where this goes :) .
