Separate Mail Server for main domain?

Just a question, I'm struggling to work this out at the moment.

I have a DA server which I setup using mydomain.com on the installation. However I am using gmail under my domain for email, anyone on the DA server that sends an email to [email protected] receives a bounced email even though I have updated the MX records. It seems that since both my domain, and the domain trying to email me are on the same server it looks locally and decides the email address does not exist therefor it bounces.

Any help would be appreciated? How do people setup multiple DA servers and manage to use a single mail server and not have these issues?

oh really? really? You have no idea how hard i'm beating the desk with my head right now... I have been editing all records through the DNS area at admin level for oh, I don't know, 3 years at least? Never thought about looking inside the user level.

For completeness:

Exim doesn't even bother to do a DNS lookup if it's making what it thinks is a local delivery. So you need to tell exim the mail isn't hosted locally.

DirectAdmin puts the setting into a special area for MX records because both need to be changed for offsite mail hosting to work.
