server losing connection to client

Hi,

I did not know exactly where to put this issue as I'm not sure what the exact problem is.

I seem to be having some sort of strange server connection problems from time to time.

Sometimes, when I acess my servers from a network and am working on say 2 to 3 sites simultaniously (using ftp, directadmin, squirrelmail, mysql, and sometimes ssh or other things) my connection to the server can slow down tremendously or even stop all together.

This problem only happens from the local network, because as soon as I use my phone or another network to connect to the servers the connection is perfect while the original problematic network is slow or dead.

I can connect to every other site as if nothing was wrong so I am pretty sure it is something to do with my server blocking or limiting traffic to and from my home network, or my home network limiting my outgoing connection to the server.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? If you need more info let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

It's most likely something on the network through which you connect, either the LAN portion or the WAN portion.

It could be a firewall issue on your server but only if you've done something out of the ordinary with firewall settings.

I havent done anything out of the ordinary with the firewall. It is just strange because I have had the same issue with another site which leads me to believe that its not my servers.

I can't seem to figure out what could be causing my LAN router to act this way. Any ideas?

Just another update...

I did a tracert to the server and it seems to time out and take a little longer at certain hops than it should. It is not always the same hops though so I am not quite sure what is happening. The tracert always completes but not as quickly as it should.

The really strange part is that when my neighbor does the exact same tracert, with the same ISP and same network connection, it works as it should.

Again, no clue why this is happening so any ideas would be helpful.

It is not that change to have other hops when performing another traceroute.

When traceroutes seem to take different paths even right after one another, it could be because there are some problems on the Internet itself and it's not self-healing as well as it should. Your hosting company may not be providing optimal bgp routing.

In a fully meshed network, traceroute often takes other routes.

I run my servers from my office on a fairly basic network. Do you mean the ISP? or my setup?

How would I fix this issue if there is any way?

BGP is provided by the network provider. You should work with them on your network connectivity problem, as you appear to be convinced it's not your problem.

However first check your router, switch(es) and/or hub(s). Do you have a problem when you're in your office, on the same local network? If not, it's probably a problem with how your ISP is handling your connection. And verify that you don't have a connection with high download speed but low upload speed, as most inexpensive connections not designed for webserving are set up that way.
