I am fairly new at the server side of things - still learning. I am the admin for my server (just fired our network administrator) and just purchased a new domain. I set up the dns - that all works fine. Now how do I set it up so I can upload files to it. I have read everything that seemed to pertain to this issue, but I must have either not understood what I was reading or just flat out did not absorb it. Would appreciate some help asap.

You posted to a section of the forum for server administrator issues.

Do you own a server running DirectAdmin?

Or are you a webhosting customer?

How did you find out about this forum?

Jeff

Yes I own a server running DirectAdmin - why else would I be in the forum. Look as I stated I am new to this and just need a little help getting started. Could you please answer my question or point me to the part of the forum I am supposed to be in? Thanks in advance

You'd be surprised how many clients of webhosting companies end up asking questions on these forums.

I'd start with Site-Helper. You may need to study Site-Helper for Resellers and Site-Helper for Admins as well.

If your server is set to use the Enhanced skins it won't match Site-Helper, which was written for "Default" skins.

You can also watch (and perhaps buy) the reseller and user flash videos for DirectAdmin at CheapDemos.com.

Your question:
Now how do I set it up so I can upload files to it
is both simplistic and open-ended. I suppose the best answer would be "via ftp".

It appears as if you're looking for beginner's help.

This forum isn't designed to teach beginners how to upload a website, but rather to help with specific answers to specific DirectAdmin questions.

I'm not sure how to give you better answers.

To start with, login to the administrator interface of DirectAdmin (typically admin or webadmin). From there, click on "reseller" - depending on the skin, it could be on the right hand side, or down across the bottom.

Once in the reseller skin, Click "Add User"

Enter the information for that domain, and your email address. DA will then email you (automatically) a welcome email with all the details on how to access that particular users webspace, and where to put files, etc. It'll also give you a new login to a user are which you can use to create email accounts, databases, etc.

If you need more help, I'd be happy to assist you getting started. Feel free to PM or email me.

I'm A Guilty Culprit

I didn't know this forum was for people that "own their OWN DA. I'm on a hosting company.

I also realize that although we have paid for this, we have the license/version listed under another person. That may be why I can't find our mysql folder using ftp.

Since I am already running 2 localhost, I now realize that we could have bought our own DA..... and I know we'll be 100% responsible for the installations and all. I may not know the OS yet, but I am positive I could have installed the OS & the DA with little problems.

Oh well... that may be part of the reason why none of my posts have been replied to so far. Now I understand, and I'm sorry for posting.

We'll just have to get our own license and take it from there.

I'll be back!!

Thanks for the forum. I did however learn a few things here, and alot of my questions weren't asked because I read the postings.

I think even more important, this forum is for helping server administrators with the ins and outs of running DirectAdmin.

While these forums cannot possibly teach you how to be a systems administrator some of us can certainly help you with specific questions; I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

The problem is your question to this thread is a rather open ended question to what is obviously the wrong forum.

Your question probably belongs at User-Level Difficulties. I've already suggested some help resources for you and hopefully you've been able to get some help there. Additionally, hostpc.com has offered to help you if you contact him.

Buying your own DA license isn't going to get you any better or worse response on these forums, as the forums are a volunteer self-help effort.

You can't find your mysql folder via ftp because it's not available through ftp; owning a license in your own name isn't going to resolve that.

Jeff

Good luck.

Re: I'm A Guilty Culprit

I also did not know this forum was mostly for Admins who actualy own their own server and not for non-owned colocated servers. That may be a reason I often get little response to posts as my issues are perhaps too basic for such an advanced forum like this?

Jeff's surprising (news for me) post regarding this forum being mostly for owners of their own server raises some issues such as these:

How do I buy my old colocated server or do I need a new one? Where do I buy it at? Can I operate it in my home or do I need a hosting center? How do I locate a hosting center? How much do they charge? Do they monitor it 24x7? Can I go there at anytime to access the server in person if needed? How do I transfer all the files and setups to a new server with little if any down-time? Will the hosting center do that and install the new server for me? How much does it cost to buy my own server? How much does DA CP licence cost? Is it renewable yearly or a one time fee? etc. Thanks.

Thus far no replies have been received by post or PM to my 2 posts and new thread of today. Answers to theabove questions would be appreciated.

I am still wondering why the forum is restricted to owned servers according to the Super Mod, in view of the fact my colocated server may not be owned HOWEVER I in fact have Admin, Resllr and User access so since this forum is for ADMINS and I have admin access that is tough to understand unless I am missing something?

What I should have written was "for admins who administer their own servers." I apologize for the misunderstanding. I don't mean to be rude, but I'm sometimes quite overworked.
That may be a reason I often get little response to posts as my issues are perhaps too basic for such an advanced forum like this?
Usually if you don't get a response it's because no one has one for you. Sometimes it's because readers may feel you should look up the answer yourself. I can only speak for myself. I'm a volunteer here. I respond to as many posts as I can. If something is simple, I generally don't respond unless someone's brought it to the top again after a week or so without a response; I just don't have the time. If I don't know the answer I don't respond unless i feel I should know the answer; then I don't mind looking it up. But again, only as and if I have the time.
Jeff's surprising (news for me) post regarding this forum being mostly for owners of their own server raises some issues such as these:

The responses you get won't change if you get your own server. It may affect service you get from DirectAdmin Support, since you don't own your license. But it may not; you'd have to ask them.
Where do I buy it at?
From DirectAdmin.
Can I operate it in my home or do I need a hosting center?
To host at home you'll need a highspeed connection with at least one static IP# reserved to the server; if you're going to use the same connection for your own surfing you'll probably want at least two IP#s; one for your server and one for your router for your local connection.
How do I locate a hosting center?
Googling "colocation" or "directadmin colocation" (without the quotes) will get you a lot of hits.
How much do they charge? Do they monitor it 24x7? Can I go there at anytime to access the server in person if needed?
Yes and no. For us the answers are one thing; for another colocation center they may be another. Obviously to be able to visit you'll have to use a colocation center near you.
How do I transfer all the files and setups to a new server with little if any down-time?
DirectAdmin backup and restore. Yes there are issues; most have been discussed in these forums, but it does work.
Will the hosting center do that and install the new server for me?
Some will some won't. Most will charge extra for anything except a "plug-in and turn-on install".
How much does it cost to buy my own server?
Anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 (or more) for a 1U server (a server designed to fit in a cabinet or rack at a hosting company).
How much does DA CP licence cost? Is it renewable yearly or a one time fee? etc.
See the pricing here.
