We recently started managing a system for a client who was getting tens of thousands of spams a day... or at least it seed as if he was; undeliverable spams in his outgoing queue it close to a half million. His load average would go as high as 50 and his email system was so impacted he was hardly getting email.
We rebuilt his ancient exim.conf to use blocking (SpamBlocker) and he has control of his inboxes again.
SpamAssassin is an excellent tool, but with the amount of spam many servers get today you need a lot of power to run it.
Which is why I recommend SpamBlocker (built in to DA; you only have to turn it on) every chance I get.
