Spamassassin not working for the main domain

Dear all,

I just inherited a DA system and I have problems setting spamassassin to scan emails for the main domain. Spamassassin is working fine for all the other virtual domains hosted on that box.

The real problem is the following: the admin who registered the DA system set the hostname to maindomain.com. I cannot create a user to manage maindomain.com because Da always reports that the domain name already exists.

I also cannot use mailing lists for the main domain.

I could rename the host like host.maindomain.com but then all our users on maindomain.com will be treated as virtual users and will have to login into the webmail through [email protected] (and I don't want that).

Please advise what is the best thing to do to enable spamassassin to work for the main domain and how to enable mailing list creation.

Thanks.

The best thing to do is to do it the right way.

Which is to have a hostname which is NOT the same as a domain name on the server.

Look here for more information.

Thank you Jeff for your answer.

You are probably right when you say the best thing is to do the right thing and have a hostname which is NOT the same as a domain name on the server.

I, however, am worried about how the users on the main domain would be treated. Would they be treated as virtual users and have to sign in as [email protected] when using webmail?

Or could I still leave the /etc/virtual/host.maindomain.com and /etc/virtual/maindomain.com folders empty so that it'll be the /etc/passwd file which will be used to authentify the users' on maindomain.com??

Please advise.

Thanks.

If the domain is in the virtual list at /etc/virtual/domains then exim will treat it as a virtual domain and will use the subdirectory of /etc/virtual.

If the domain isn't in the list, exim will look in the /etc/passwd file.

Note that I still recommend doing it the right way, and I take no responsibility for helping anyone who insists on contravening the DA system.

And I've not tested it so I have no idea if SpamAssassin will properly for the domain or not, but I'm guessing not, since DA still thinks it's not a virtual mailbox.

Thank you Jeff!

I will work on it and let you know what happened.
