Hello! I'm helping my teacher set up a website and blog, and I've never really messed with subdomains or anything very complicated. I've set up a subdomain (blog.hisdomain.com) to hold a wordpress blog. According to wordpress all I need to do is change the cname of the subdomain to the url for the wordpress blog. I've done this but nothing is happening, although I do have a nice little box that says "this is a placeholder for blog.hisdomain.com" which is reassuring but not helpful. Wordpress is saying the fault lies with godaddy which is where the site is hosted, but that doesn't really make sense to me. We've tried to redirect the subdomain to the wordpress url in the meantime so it's at east usable but that's not working either. There seems to be a problem with doing this on the school computers which have a firewall. I've changed the ns records for the subdomain to the same ns records as the domain.

I am totally confused, and this seems like there is such a simple answer to this mess!!

His domain is eslickphoto.com. Eslickphoto.com:2222 works, but blog.eslickphoto.com:2222 does not work. Sorry, I was using a generic domain for example purposes. His website is indeed host on a directadmin

That would have been useful information in the first post. We cannot help you when you give us fake information.

Ok so the subdomain is working. What is your question for us? Have you installed wordpress somewhere on blog.eslickphoto.com?

It is a simple thing. You appear to be making it complicated with the use of CNAMES, firewalls, redirecting, and so on. What is the link to the blog?
 
I apologize for using example information, I wasn't intending to confuse, create chaos or otherwise insult.

The link to the blog is eslickphoto.wordpress.com. Wordpress says to simply change the CNAME for blog.eslickphoto.com to eslickphoto.wordpress.com. This has been done in the directadmin, but I still get an error. Wordpress says,

"How to fix it

You must make some changes to your domain before we can continue. (Sorry about the technical jargon!) The preferred method is to use the tools provided by your registrar to add a CNAME record. It should look like this:

blog 14400 IN CNAME eslickphoto.wordpress.com.
Each registrar has its own method of adding CNAME records. The important parts of this record are your subdomain ("blog") and your original blog domain ("eslickphoto.wordpress.com")."

Am I barking up the wrong tree and this is something that needs to be done at godaddy where the domain was purchased? I'm very sorry I am so confused which makes my posts confusing. I seem to be the only student in this entire crummy community college that has a basic clue of where to start, but that's obviously not enough.

No you didn't. You set up the blog over at wordpress.com. That is where the blog is being hosted.

True. That means you did not need to create a subdomain on the server. Creating a subdomain on the server does a lot more than create a dns record which is what wordpress was talking about above.

I don't think the site is hosted at godaddy. I don't think godaddy uses DirectAdmin which is why I my first question.

You see wordpress says to create a CNAME record. They didn't didn't say anything about creating a subdomain.

So the bottom line is you have to make a change at the server that is hosting your DNS for eslickphoto.com. You have to create a CNAME record for blog. You can only do this if you have been given access for DNS Management. http://site-helper.com/dns.html#cname
 
Okay, I think I understand.

So it's not necessary to create an entire subdomain in the "subdomains" section of directadmin. I have deleted that subdomain from that section. In the DNS settings in directadmin I kept the CNAME for blog.eslickphoto.com as eslickphoto.wordpress.com

This is all done in the directadmin DNS settings area, which is where the domain is hosted. Godaddy is just the registrar, so I don't need to change anything in there to get things to work, correct? I did not know this before, but my teacher had added a subdomain in the control panel at godaddy, which I have now deleted.

I am still getting the same error as before from wordpress, but I'm guessing that's because it's still processing all these changes. I will wait a few hours and see if it work, unless I've misunderstood and done something incorrectly.
 
Correct me if I'm mistaken on this. If I were to add a subdomain to use as section of my site, I would change it's NS records to the same value as my regular site, or am I wrong on that part. In order for it to work it would basically need to have a index and all the fixings of a regular site, correct?
