Ensim uses mbox and has imap maybe look into the imap server they're using? Personally I like mbox better but I know there's several reasons for preferring maildir I just like the simplicity of backing up a mbox based mailbox...
 
I believe DirectAdmin support has already said they have IMAP in hand; I don't think they need to find another server. As far as Maildir is concerned, it would be quite easy to install Maildir format on new installations, the problem is in the conversion.

As far as your point on backups is concerned, it's actually easier to backup Maildir format, as you don't have locks to worry about and you don't risk not getting a file because it's changing as you back it up.
