I've actually installed Debian 12 on my home NAS in a VM...... Went flawlessly - I changed a licence to 11, still worked.

What's the experience here with Debian? I am sick of the RHEL, Centos, Alma, Rocky drama and was thinking about migrating.

We were never really RHEL, so we've always been using Directadmin with Debian-based distros, even back when CentOS was clearly the main supported OS. We started out with Ubuntu 10.04, 12.04 and 14.04 and used Debian from version 8 on.

There were some issues in the past (i.e. systemd related, or because of Debian using /home/mysql instead of /var/lib/mysql as datadir) but since a greater percentage of people started using Debian with Directadmin and Debian got a bit more attention from DA support, there have been less and less issues in my experience, nothing major in the last few years.

If I understand correctly, when doing an OS upgrade it is recommended to do a fresh Directadmin install on a new Debian server and migrate all accounts to the new server. However, we've never had any issues with doing in-place OS upgrades (i.e. first upgrading Debian OS en then doing a Custombuild ./build all). We have several servers which started out as Debian 8 and are now running Debian 11 and DA without issues.

So in short, I would definitely recommend Debian.
