I used custombuild for the first time last night. From what I can see so far, it worked really well apart from one thing. Thanks, smtalk.

The thing that didn't work was dovecot and that's because I'm running MailScanner and therefore had 2 x exim conf files. So, all I did was:

1. Ran a file compare between exim.conf and exim_send.conf
2. Copied and pasted the changes from exim.conf to exim_send.conf
3. Restarted exim and MailScanner
4. Updated the mailboxes by runing:
cd /usr/local/directadmin/custombuild
./build todovecot

Naturally, it took me an hour of frantic searching etc before I figured out what the heck was going wrong and how I could fix it!

Hopefully this may be of use to anyone else who uses MailScanner.

LOL all they did was package spamass and clamav into a package. No different then using them seperate.

paul-w (and others using Mailscanner),

My point in asking was to know if you were doing anything you can't already do with exim.

The answer so far is that there's nothing you've told me that you can't do with the standard exim.conf file. I don't know if it's worth the complexity of running two copies of Exim. I've separated this thread into it's own discussion.

Hi Jeff,

Why shouldn't someone use Mailscanner??
Currently i receive a lot of spam while running spamblocker and spamassassin.

Exactly what does MailScanner do? Exactly what does Mailscanner call?

From the MailScanner Website:
The software works with any Unix-based system and is compatible with a wide range of mail transports. It comes with support for any combination of 25 different virus scanner packages, including the free ClamAV scanner, and its design allows the use of multiple virus scanners in parallel to increase the level of security.

Protection against spam is mostly based on the widely acclaimed SpamAssassin package, which again is free and open source. It is supplemented with fast blacklist lookups that can be used to reject a large proportion of messages with minimal overhead.
All that said, why not just use SpamAssassin, ClamAV, and blocklists directly through DirectAdmin?
