Hi, im looking at using DA. My idea is to purchase a 1 month license and test DA on a few distro's, mainly to see which one is best to install DA upon.

im looking at either:

redhat 8.0 or 9.0
fedora core 1 or 2
whitebox linux

Ive read thru some of the howto's and some are done on redhat 8, whereas they seem like they would be useable on fedora and i havent tried whitebox before (yet), whereas im competent with redhat and fedora. (Personally preferr Gentoo.. but hey)

So yeah, i was hoping i might be able to get some pointers on which distro to use, so i can save myself abit of time choosing which O/S to build upon first, or which O/S has the most support for DA, or or or...

anyways, thanks for any advice in advance :)

I'd keep away from Redhat 8 and 9 as they are no longer supported by Redhat.

You should look at Fedora or Whitebox.

We investigated FreeBSD.

Our history includes running an ISP under BSDi-OS (a commercial BSD operating system), so we expected it to be quite simple.

However we continue to see many problems on these forums that appear to be BSD specific.

We've done several successful WhiteBox Linux installs (WBEL3 is an open source compile of the RHEL3 source code), and can recommend it highly.

CentOS is another open source compile of the RHEL3 source code. We'll be doing our first test CentOS installs this week.

Fedora?

Does anyone have any experience with Fedora and DirectAdmin?

Hello,

We have been using Fedora Core 2 for a few months now and we are very please with how well it works. There are a few minior problems getting DA to install apache correctly but once you figure it out, its very easy. We have posted how to get around the apache problem as well. Like I said Fedora is great and we rarley ever have problems with them once we get them going. If you need help with Fedora, just yell for us :D

AFAIR we have DA running on Whitebox, Fedora and at least 1 Redhat 9 server. There are absolutely no issues with any of them.

Is it possible to get DA running on Gentoo ? Or is it possible to get the directadmin crew to alter their os priority by making a contribution? I bet there are ppl like me who are willing to pay extra to get DA running on Gentoo linux.

My experiences:

Fedora Core 2 works beautifully for us. However, the main reason we went with it is because it was the only maintained distro supported by our colo provider. (they do support on Debian, RH9 and Fedora)
I am by no means a *nix guru. When I run into troubles, I'd prefer to have some guy I could call for help. Since the resident *nix expert at our colo partner told me he had experience with Fedora (and could hence support it) but not with any of the RHEL-based stuff, it was an easy choice. If this hadn't been the case, I probably woulda gone with WHEL or CentOS.

Still, I'm happy with Fedora Core 2 so far.
In fact, I e-mailed the DA guys before making my decision. I hope Mark doesn't mind me quoting the e-mail here, but this is what he said:
We suggest choosing an OS you are most familiar with. DirectAdmin is very stable on Enterprise 3.0 (CentOS 3.x), and also Fedora Core 1 and 2. We would suggest these without a problem, since they are curent OS's that receive lots of updates. DirectAdmin also runs well on FreeBSD 4.x but the OS is a lot less friendly.

Yes, we are running on fedora core2 at the moment, 2 servers. One is however experiencing problems with quota (processes hanging at some times). The other is to new to have judgement on.

The main reason for asking for gentoo is the portage system from gentoo and the frendlieness of getting a system update. Currently we have several Gentoo machines running without a panel at all (internal hosting only) but we want to get some more machines running gentoo and DA. So therefore the question still standing is "can we somehow get DA running on gentoo :)"

I'd certainly hope that DA won't spend much time right now on porting to a relatively unused platform, especially with so many other unanswered issues.

If you really want to get a response, though, I'd suggest sending an email to their sales department.

Gentoo is not as mature as other distros. Support for Debian would be a more logical choice at this juncture.

True, Debian is more stable. But the unique selling point for Gentoo is the fact that there is no decent panel for it. If DA would run on Gentoo, it would be the facto standard on Gentoo. And the strain on development can be reduced by investing in some kind of participation project (like some kind of hijackware)

More than you probably think.

Agreed, these are not server statistics but mere desktoops, but it gives somewhat a picture of the popularity. And considering the install unfriendliness of gentoo, these numbers even surprised me :)

Just because its been installed on home computers a lot does not mean its a good server Operating System for example. Windows XP has the biggest chunk of home installations and would blow those numbers out of the water, but its a horrible patform for a server.

Just my opinion.
