Which O/S for DA?

Becourse of the friendly update procedures, the optimalisation for the hardware used on all software, the commitment of the community and the stability overall.

Statisticly we have the least problems with gentoo servers. The most problems currently with fedora, followed by sun cobalts and freebsd.

Just because its been installed on home computers a lot does not mean its a good server Operating System for example. Windows XP has the biggest chunk of home installations and would blow those numbers out of the water, but its a horrible patform for a server.

Your example is not fair. Windows XP is not even designed to be a server--you would use a Windows Server product.

Linux distributions don't have that distinction of client and server versions. In fact, you could feasibly have the exact same kernel source using any number of different kernel distributions. The difference is in the methods and utilities used to install, maintain, and upgrade the OS. Gentoo has a very innovative approach to that methodology. Once you read through the very well thought-out documentation to set the system up, you can take an extremely "hands on" approach or stick with a stable core platform like any of the other distributions.

To say that it is not a good "server operating system" implies a lack of knowledge of how Linux works in the first place, because a different distribution is not a different OS. At the very least you should have said that you don't think that Gentoo is a good distribution for a website hosting platform. I would accept this as your opinion, even though I disagree.

I wasn't saying that Gentoo was a bad server operating system, but just bringing up the point that just because more people use something it is not always the best. Bad Example? probably

Since I have not used Gentoo, I did not state what my opinion of it is as a server Operating System. ;)
Even if I had, since I have never used it I wouldn't have much ground to stand on would I :p

I suppose I can, as long as I qualify it:

Gentoo is a bad server OS because it includes a complete development system including compilers.

Though of course DA files on this score as well, there are a lot of admins who would never put a development system out on the 'net.

Your argument on gentoo with development system is not relevant, DA needs these development tools also and the discussion was if the OS was ok vor DA.

Besides, getting those tools on a box if someone already has unauthorised access should not be that hard.

It looks to me somewhat like "i don't put my tools in my car, someone might use them to get away with my car after breaking in"
