Which VPS system do you use?

Do you currently offer a VPS solution? If so, which one? Xen, KVM, VMWare,. or other?

Do you have it integrated into a billing platform? Which one? Which plugin?

Open for discussion.

Thanks.

Thanks, czotos. I'm looking for more direct experience, especially in integrating with WHMCS for provisioning, etc.

Anyone else?

Thanks!

very interesting question and surprised at the lack of response
finding a tried and true system would certainly benefit those of us who lack this knowledge , also why did you choose the one you use over others?

We use WHMCS for billing and Linux KVM for VMs. The plan for later this year or next year is to first build a control panel around it and after that automate provisioning. We already have most things as separate things ready to use (tested and ready for production), we just need to combine it and finish it.

We use a customized WeFact for billing and Citrix Xenserver for vps-nodes. Because we're also a softwaredevelopment company we've build our own controlpanel to connect the dots (backups, monitoring, management, etc).
Honestly, we went for XenServer because we once had to migrate a few hundred dedicated servers to a vpsplatform that was already production proof. Basically I had to choose between citrix and vmware, but having little experience (at that time) about performance/hardware combinations of either one, I simply choose the cheaper (licensewise) version which turned out to be citrix.
That would save us a few buckets with euros to put in either extra nodes or storages.
It wasn't a bad choice after all, as xenserver recently went fully open-source which is a softwaredevelopers wet dream ;)

I have a server running ESXi 5.5 for my own use, so it's not integrated with any billing system.

Has their ISO gone open source? This might be an ideal solution for me if it's got community support, as there's good integration with WHMCS.

I want something tested and working by the end of the year.

Are there any free gui's to admin it?

For XenServer? Sure, you have xencenter (windows management client) and the commandline tool 'xe' which is pretty easy to use and wel documented.

I'm still looking for a reason to use one of the sotions over another, and then for a plugin for WHMCS to automate it.

Helpful comments appreciated.

Free would be a nice reason if you have 10-20-30 vpsnodes ;)

But a goed reason to go for vmware would be their better io system support. If you're going to run freebsd vm's a lot, just don't use xenserver, but use vmware. If you're happy with running vm's of fully supported os templates, use XenServer. It's a lot more 'open' so you can do everthing you want with it. It's commandline tool is great for use in bash files to automate whatever you want.

Thanks for your valued input.

I like xenserver, and I bought The Book of Xen some time ago.I understand it and I know I can manage xen from the command line. But I'd like an automated solution.

I have two concerns:

1: Is there a good WHMCS plugin for it?

2. Is there a CentOS 6 kernel yet? When I've looked I can only find CentOS 5 kernel support and I'd like to build nodes which will last a while.

I'm going to be lookingat Proxmox:

@scrupul0us
Thanks for your helpful information. Can you please post links to the tools you use?

Gladly,

http://www.solusvm.com/

It's a pretty nice setup... VERY easy to use... Scalable, etc... Support is great... They use WHMCS so adding licenses is super easy...

Feel free to ask me just about anything about it.... We've been using it for about 2 years now

Thanks for your kind offer of help; I'm sure a lot of us will appreciate your help.

I've tried to put together a list of the pieces of the puzzle:

First of Course is SolusVM:

SolusVM:
Enterprise Master License: $10.00/month USD
Slave Only Master License: $2.50/month USD

I'm not sure how many of which of these I need.

For example, my WHMCS install is going to be on a server on which we don't do any hosting at all, and to start we'll have one KVM host on which we'll install VPS instances as clients buy them.

Later we'll install another KVM host on which we'll install additional VPS licenses as clients order them.

Can you help me understand what we'll need to buy to start, and what we'll need to buy later as we expand?

Another thing I notice is that SolusVM is only one piece of the puzzle. On the WHMCS website I find these three WHMCS add-on modules designed to work with it:

SolusVMControl for WHMCS: £29.99 GBP
http://www.primexeon.com/scripts/solusvm-control-for-whmcs/

SolusVM WHMCS AutoAuth: $15.00 USD
https://www.serverping.net/clients/cart.php?gid=3

SolusVM - Client Access - SolusVM - Acesso como Cliente: R$80.00 (??)
http://clientes.aminhaloja.com.br/solusvm_cliente.php

Do I need at least the first of these? Or can I use SolusVM directly from WHMCS?

Do you use any of thes? Do you consider any of them necessary? Why or why not? What do they add?

And then of course, if you can supply a definitive link to how to install a KVM host (hopefully on CentOS 6), that would be helpful as well.

Again, thanks very much for y our help.
