Hello.

Well. 1st of all I would ask a simple question. In the apache error logs, I always see SH: host cmd not found. Why is that so ?

Do I need to install it as apt-get install host ?


2ndly,

When I do link building and harvesting URL on my websites. Of course the software catches up page URL and starts submitting. During that time my apache almost crashes. SSH won't work, CP won't and all the sites won't. On viewing console, I could see httpd out of memory and killing process errors being spammed.

On server-status I could see the same IP through which I run software of link building, sending about 222 requests. Ram is like 3GB on my server so why does it crash ? I had to restart whole system to make websites working again . Even on closing the software, it should stop but maybe it was still not timing out.


How do I solve this issue ?
In this way anyone can crash my system easily.

The host command I think it is in bind-utils package.
 
I don't know why it didn't install or maybe because I have Debian Net-install that's why . Should I manually install it ?

Also about the 2nd and the major issue,

This was the server-status page when all my websites were not responding. I opened the page after spamming 1000 buttons because it just won't load like the websites. The server was just inaccessible with everything.

Total accesses: 7611 - Total Traffic: 49.2 MB
CPU Usage: u61.97 s72.01 cu0 cs0 - 1.3% CPU load
.741 requests/sec - 5024 B/second - 6.6 kB/request
237 requests currently being processed, 0 idle workers

And as said before, more of the requests were from my machine which were just harvesting my links. Why would it cause the system to almost crash or not respond ? Previously, it would just not respond and come back to it's real stage after like 15 mins but this time it was never coming back so I had to restart the machine.

Also previously, after about 1000 attempts to open the Control-Panel I went to options and saw this in Options so I took screenshots ( Attached ) .

You can see in the screenshots that Apache processes are at Spam. Restarting Apache fixed the issue for me at that time.


But this time, I sent a bit more requests through the Link-Builder software.

So the control-panel didn't work and restart was the only fix.


Please explain how could I fix this .

Users don't use RAM; processes do. you need to determine which of the processes (probably processes started by the user) are using the RAM, and then configure them with limits.

So when are more requests ( users ) from a same IP causing more RAM if it really is and I have a 3GB ram which is more than enough for 22,222 requests parallel and I am running off/crashing with just 222 requests.

Why ?

Limiting is a fix but I'm still not sure why Apache ran out of memory.

Why not find out why instead of limiting.

We should see the cause because 3GB can hold even big sites easily.
 
To find out reasons you need gather more information. Top's output is not enough.

Examine apache logs + httpd status. Try to understand what vhost and what scripts make problem. Log mysql slow queries and watch it.
 
I will try to.

But let me tell you that I've done a clean install of the OS and Directadmin itself. Everything is default as it should be. Nothing has been changed.

I have 3GB of ram without any swap and 2Ghz processor. DA hardly gets up to 1GB if like a 700mb is cached. In the apache logs, I just see host command not found being spammed. And since I believe everything is default, other people using DA must have optimized the apache according to their website traffic or IP-access. Because otherwise link-building software like the one I currently have can easily crash all apaches.

I don't basically know how should I optimize it up. I am getting like a daily 3000 visitors at just the start of my website. And I won't be surprised if the number climbs up-to 20,000 daily visitors. I am doing a lot of SEO for it externally. Some SEO softwares just do it through other sites but Harvestor is something that extracts links from your site simultaneously.

Please tell me what should I do to optimize or fix this issue ?

If I do just some of Link-building, system becomes inaccessible for sometime and comes back after 5-10 mins. But if I do a lot, apache even crashes after a process spam and out of memory errors. And Link-Building is what I do on other windows servers, not direct-admin server.

There must be a way out to prevent this. Here is my server-status page which I obtained after spamming the Enter button because it wasn't opening during the Link-Building.

And 94.228.215.161 is the IP of the machine, I run link-builder SEO software on. I don't know what this is but could it be Ddos I am doing on my own machine ? Because I just ran the software, same inaccessible thing happened. 1st ping to machine was 250 and the next like 25,000 . Even on closing the software, the system doesn't get back :( . Or maybe there are a lot of connections by an IP simultaneously and DA is not limiting them. On asking DA support, they told to get some limiter mod but they won't provide support for it.

I believe this is something that should be up in DA by default otherwise the software I have for SEO can crash any website running DA. That's sad.

When this thing happened, I was trying to open /CMD_SYSTEN_INFO but it was timing out due to this inaccessible system apache. After I somehow restarted apache because everything was like stuck and slow, I viewed Directadmin logs and found this.

RAM is not the only thing, shortage of which can cause such things.
I do not know, what do your scripts do. How many requests to MySQL do they do? Do they write anything to disk? Do they request any information through Internet. Perhaps, your disk system was too busy. How many disks do you have? Hardware/software RAID? There's no need to give me answers to this questions (perhaps somebody wants, but not me). Just think about it. I will not recommend you anything detailed. You need a complex audit of your server to find a bottle neck. Please, hire somebody.

See MySQL Logs, see iostat, re-mount your partitions with noatime option.

Default settings are a good start point. It's NOT the way you should go on with a medium/high load project.

P.S. To organize a file sharing hosting, you'd better get rid of apache as soon, as possible. At least, set up a frontend to apache, that will work with all static files: pics, archives, audio/video files.
 
I believe the disk is not a problem.

My websites are simple blogs which write to SQL.

And sometimes even when nothing is running, no SEO software,

Just normal traffic, it slows down.

And this is what happened when I tried to view the console and restart apache.

Every connection to your site cause more than one disk operation. Even MySQL operates with HDD.

Believe is a good thing, but without facts, it won't do.
I think, I can not help you anymore without additional information, perhaps somebody else.

Please Install atop and see interactive output with command:

You will able to see, what is going on with your server. Pay attention to red alerts.
 
I think I got what's happening. I captured the screenshot when it was happening . [ Attached ]


The CPU usage was fluctuating highly from 50-70% .

And apache was being spammed with different process pids.
Each pid using 1-2% of CPU .

Even on stopping it didn't stop perfectly and I had to send about 5 times stop command. Screenshots attached.

And even when I start apache, it starts with about 15 pid files.

The main issue is just Apache process and pids at a lot of spam causing more and more CPU load.

I've just seen RAM/HDD are doing fine. 2GB of RAM is still free.
HDD is functioning all well.

It's just the fluctuating CPU ( caused due to apache ) .

It worked well during the early days but now started to cause problems.

On restarting apache, it starts with 15 pids.

But on system restart, it starts with 1 pid.
 
What do you mean by your use of the word spam?

CPU usage, if caused by apache, is likely being caused by additional apache processes, which may be held open longer than they need to be.

All of this is controllable by Apache configuration.

By spam do you mean someone is attacking your server? If so, then you need to choose between external blocking (firewalling, etc., either on your server or at your upstream), or managing internally, perhaps by mod_evasive and the like. Perhaps your processor really is too small for your needs? I've got no way to tell.

I don't think DirectAdmin itself has anything to do with it; I'd recommend focussing on apache instead.

You writre that on restarting apache it starts with 15 PIDs but that with a system restart it starts with one PID. Are you sure it starts with those 15 PIDs; that they're not left over from the stop (see your own error messages while trying to stop apache)?

Have you posted any questions on this inability to stop PIDs to any apache forum (DirectAdmin is neither using nor interfering with apache; you should be able to get help on an apache forum which could focus in on the problem.

Is anyone else seeing this kind of problem?

By Process Spam I mean that a lot of those processes start to run by itself and the number keeps increasing with different pids. As you can also see the logs and console scrfeenshot, you can see the system tries to kill them by sending kill signals but they don't stop or quit.

On stopping httpd, it stops all the 50 processes/pids and when started again, it starts with 15 pids. And yes, on restarting system, it starts only with a single pid. I don't know why.

I do have 2Ghz processor which is enough, I've been holding up 5000 daily visitors with this processor too 20 days back, but now it just happens even at 50 visitors and sometimes not even at 1000. So traffic is really not the cause. It just happens randomly as I said. It may also possible be due to a signal some specific client sends.

I've asked directadmin support, but he's too misunderstanding. He's asking me to use mods to protect a specific IP connecting multiple times but it doesn't happen specifically with the same IP. It's just random. Using external mods out of directadmin support won't be a fix. Since DA that I have is a default install so everything should be configurable through it.

That's not spam. The word spam, while originally referring only to Usenet News Groups, has been expanded to also refer to email. But not to a daemon starting processes.

You can kill any process by forcing it to stop:

where 0000 is replaced by the pid.

If the standard kill command doesn't kill them, then there's some reason they've gotten out of control, but...

If stopping httpd stops them, then they don't need the kill -9 command, but then I'd have to ask why apache can't kill them normally. And the answer, frankly, is that I don't know.

Most likely pache restarts with 15 pids because of your settings in your httpd configuration.

Nor do I. You stand a better chance of finding out because you can check your configuration. Note that even if you post your entire configuration here in the forums that doens't mean I can take the time to study it.

If it was enough previously but isn't now, then there's been some change between now and then. Perhaps you've got some different code running on a website or perhaps someone is attacking you.

According to whom? DirectAdmin's basic install isn't working for you. If you're not willing to find out why, then should any of us do your work for you? Perhaps you should hire someone to do a complete forensic examination of your server, starting with the possibility that it's been hacked.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually willing to find out. That's why I have picked up all the possible log files I could, seen them myself too, posted them up here too.

What I've observed in the logs, it's neither an attack nor a Hack.

About the apache logs,

So this is just what I can see,

child process XXXXX still did not exit, sending a SIGTERM
Or the host command not found

It's just apache/httpd causing the problem. The only thing I've changed is add the zend module extension in PHP.ini but I think that's not much of a problem because I've been using it before too. And that's PHP specific.

If anyone could simply tell that Multiple Apache processes are normal with each of them using 1% of CPU or more ?

Also what the Hell is the Host Command ? Should I install it ? It is a package if I do apt-get install host . If it's needed, I can install.
