We've seen this problem on a number of ocassions. It seems to be caused by a bug of some sort, but have not yet investigated it in great detail as it is relatively rare thankfully.

I'm running Thunderbird. I can't really fault it! I've used Microsoft Outlook before, but found the UI was a bit over the top (maybe it has improved in recent years?) and contained many bells and whistles I didn't need. Thunderbird is beautifully simple :)
