That's a really annoying java applet NOT IRC

They provided a service for you. Irc opens potential for dos attacks and annoying flooders.

Well, I don't like the fact that you can login as anybody. To much chance for false representation.

I'm on several IRC networks all day every day. Java based clients are not user friendly imho and I would never use one

my recent experience has given me more ddos attacks against websites then irc, if you act mature the chances of someone attacking you is slim.

given that I dont think anyone would be in a directadmin channel especially if no DA staff were there.

The only way I can see if we run one is that it is ssl secure so that that it is alot more difficult to get bots on there.

I would recommend using IRC over the java chat system.. i have used irc for years and have never really had a problem, i have even setup ircd's with services and ssl.. even tho people think bots can be nothing but trouble they have there uses! i.e faq's directly pulled from a website and full help systems.

This must be worth a try .. don't you think ?

I am not talking about eggdrop bots I am talking about drones used specifically for flooding and attacks. Like I said "SSL" is the only way to go.

almost all major irc networks now provide ssl service, I wouldnt see how ssl could be a problem at all.. I even run a small network I own and operate myself, and even I run all my serveres equiped with ssl, plus why would anyone really wanna attact a driectadmin channel? seriously... I doubt it would happen and if it did, there is several ways to stop the attacks or limit them if the channel operators know what their doing even slightly..

On Quakenet a channel Op can request either L or Q ( depending on size of channel ) which help manage channels.

By setting the channel to +r this means a user has the register with the Quakenet server before being allowed to join the channel. This stops lots of spambots etc joining the channel.

Also with the use of L/Q you can easily ban people from the channel and by setting yourself as +x this gives you a masked hostname in the form of <ircnick>@<authname>.users.quakenet.org and therefore protects you from other users finding out your IPAddress/ hostname.

If people do want an IRC channel I believe using Quakenet would be the best option as many people are already connected to it for toher channels and it provides services like L/Q for free.

I would be happy to start a channel and help manage it as I am quite familar with Quakenet and on it quite alot.

Thanks,
Grant

All you have to do is look...all networks are degrading over time.

Nevermind though I dont live in a third world country...I didnt just get this technology. I used it about 8 years ago when it was actually feasible.

wow so you acctually make statements without thinking those trough? I live in holland... Doesn't sound like a third world country does it?

IRC is in my opinion the most recognised chat system for multiuser chat. I use it for PHP, MySQL, C++ and Linux development. If you want fast help and a good source for knowlenge you should take a look there.
