I've been trying to get the IRC channel for directadmin running. Quite some people joined in and it would be great to get more people in so that we can start support by chat. This way we can replace the broken support chat on the directadmin site.

I send some emails already but it would be nice of the Directadmin Team would take some time to register the channel trough this form:
http://freenode.net/group_registration_form.php

The channel is on freenode. #directadmin and for the people under us that use links:
##directadmin @ freenode.net

Agreed it does not look very good having a chat suport on your site and that it does not work. They should remove that.

I think the IRC is a good idea worth trying to see if anyone will use it.

Oh give it a rest already...its not 1996 anymore.

Nice idea, but both #directadmin and ##directadmin are already registered.

While it might be possible to track down the owners of the above channels,
it might be more efficient to start another channel.

With that in mind, I registered #directadmin at mibbet.net.

You can access the channel via your web browser at

http://widget.mibbit.com/?settings=...8f&server=irc.mibbit.net&channel=#directadmin

If there is sufficient activity/acceptance of the channel, I would be open to sharing Channel Operator duties with other members of the DirectAdmin community.

I'm still an avid IRC user, so I'll hang out.

So which shall we use ......

Theres no-one on mibbit one.

There were ~7 on the freenode one when I tried, all quiet.

No one was on the Mibbit one because it is new....and typically, folks join a new channel, see no activity and leave. If they stayed and made posts, others would see them. Kinda like Chicken and Egg.

The Freenode channel has users....but everytime I have looked, they are silent...apparently no one speaks.

I found a network that acts very much like freenode, so I created #directadmin there. I will no longer use the Mibbit channel.

You can access it via the web at
http://qchat.rizon.net/?&channels=#directadmin

Those with IRC clients can /join #directadmin at irc.rizon.net

Looking forward to seeing folks at this new channel....and soliciting volunteers to act as Channel Operators.

If we do get a DA IRC channel, it should be done properly, like see if JBMC are interested, if they are, they could replace their "broken" live chat with this IRC one - that way, it'll get marketed properly. Otherwise, if we post a zillion links to different servers, it'll be confusing.

My 2p's worth.

Correct...sorry I had a false start with Mibbit...Once I realized that it was not suitable, I started the second one.

So far one person besides myself has visited.

Hey Debbie D., were you even born in 1996?

Back to topic, I'm in. Been an avid IRC user for years and have no intent of stopping now. Let's get it going.

people Please keep it at freenode. We don't really need the op rights if we are just going to share support. Freenode is way more suited for this kind of projects. If we bring enough attention to this thread Direct Admin staff will respond automaticly.

Let's firstly fill up the IRC channel.

@scsi: You should give it a rest. In fast most project support is done trough IRC. Linux, PHP, C++, Github they all support trough IRC and are all on the Freenode network. Please just don't reply to this thread if you are not going to support it.

Although I think its a good idea, I'll wait till its all sorted, I can't be told to go to different servers every time.

And ignore scsi, with his useless posts, I guess he just wants to troll.

@Peter Laws: just join the freenode one. That is the official DA channel.

Hard to imagine investing time and energy in a project using IRC where one can not have Channel Op rights.

If everyone waits until the issue is sorted, and no one posts in either the channels, then nothing will happen.

tlchost. I'm working on getting the rights as we speak. We should do fine without it for now. I will see if I can register the channel without the input of the DA staff for now.

The channel is owned by Freenode-staff. If they do not co-operate in giving us ChanOp access, then it makes no sense to use Freenode.

Since the Rizon channel is not controlled by non-DA folks, I still think it's a better solution.

Seems to me that trying to register and gain control of an already registered channel is like carrying coal to Newcastle.....

Once again....if you want an IRC channel with an appropriate name and the ability to have DA associated users control the channel....it's already in place....or you can continue doing it the hard way. Is it possible there may be some agenda other than control of the channel involved?

you need to register the channel on freenode with a form. I did that already now. its just waiting for freenode's response.
