Hello,

I'm about to order a DirectAdmin VPS to host some (3 or 4) websites. But I'm a little confused about the DNS and so. How many IP-addresses do I need to order? How to setup the DNS?

I've read http://admin.site-helper.com/creater.html, and that's pretty straightforward, but what nameservers do you have to provide at your domain registrar for the domain garys-hosting.com (from the example)? The same for my for users, what will the nameservers be and how to set them up?

Thanks a lot!

You need one IP# minimum for the server, and a second if you're going to only pretend to manage redundant DNS (a second server to host your DNS if you want real redundancy). Or with only a few domains you can host your slave DNS elsewhere.

You also need an additional IP# for each/any of your domains which need a secure site certificate.

You only need one set of nameservers (two minimum); you do not need a set for each domain.

When setting up nameserves at one of your own domains you need to register them at your domain registrar, following the registrar's instructions. You'll need two names and corresponding IP#s. Ideally they should point to two different servers on two different networks, for redundancy.

No matter how you do it, one server with two IP#s, or two servers, your DirectAdmin server will be your master nameserver.

Note also that the DNS specification doesn't include how to tell the slave nameserver to get information from the master nameserver. If you're using only one nameserver you don't need to concern yourself with it; they're both really the same server, but if you've got the recommended master-slave configuration you can use Master2Slave DNS Replicator as discussed on these forums, or DirectAdmin's Multi server option, also discussed on these forums, but for the latter you'll need for the second server to also run DirectAdmin.
