DNS and rDNS is covered in several posts. This is specific to rDNS.

Situation: A server server.dlb1.net hosts 3 resellers. Setting reverse dns per http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=21 requires ns1 & ns2.dlb1.net for the reverse IP zone. In fact this is wrong. The reverse for ns1 is 74.202.84.154 and ns2 is 74.202.84.155. Why does the reverse dns configuration in DA require the IP to have both ns1 & ns2 on each IP.

Thanks in advance Dave

ns1 and ns2 should be on separate servers. That being the case, both should have reverse DNS zone entries.

Note however that you can't set your own rDNS unless your upstream IP provider has given you that authority, and usually you don't get the authority unless you've got at least a C-class; otherwise they have to do it for you.

Hello Jeff,

Thanks for the response. It is true that both IPs are on the same C-class. I did ask the provider to set the reverse DNS for the two IPs and they did provide it.

Re-reading the article I see the last paragraph mentions that the DA name server is ignored unless the provider grants authority for the DNS. If I may make a suggestion, making that statement in the beginning of the article may clarify for others the prerequisite that they have two DNS servers and authority over the rDNS of the IPs.

BTW New server is working great. Gotta love DA!
