I have a user that added two more domains in his account (which is in addition to his first domain - making three total), and he changed the the new two at his registrar to point to the same nameservers on my server as his first one. (the server nameservers are used for all user domains currently) He also is using the shared IP of the server. The sites come up fine now (i.e default pages with the correct names), but he wants to redirect the second new one to the first new one.

I have done this personally by redirecting the first one at the registrar level, but I told this user to add both domains in DA and use the "Domain Pointer" option to point one to another (assuming that would work - plus I wanted to see it tried out).

However, when using the domain pointer method, he gets this error "unable to add domain pointer - You cannot use that domain as a pointer. It already exists on the server." I tried it and using the "as alias" option or not, still getting the same error.

Am I misunderstanding this domain pointer option? Seems from the help pages it is for this purpose.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

If he wants to use the pointer option he must delete the account.

He can either use the domain name to point at another domain or can set it up as a seperate site. (But not both)

An alternative way to using the DA pointer option, is to keep the account for the pointer domain, but delete it's public_html directory and replace it with a link to the public_html directory of the domain it points at.

Either mike_p is confused, or I am.

I think your client can't create the domain pointer because DNS records exist on the server.

My guess is the first time he set up a pointer the DNS zone was created, but when the pointer was deleted the DNS zone wasn't.

If you delete the DNS zone (as admin) from the server he should be able to do what he wants.

This worked, thanks to both of you. I noticed the url stays the same, however. I will tell him to use an index.php redirect page if he doesn't like it, as I know that works well too and the url in the address window changes as well. I know there are about two other ways too, but this is easiest for what he wants I think. Thanks again.

Now I'm confused? :)

As far as I can tell you're both right. As Mike says, you can either create a domain OR a pointer, but not both. The reason for this is as you explained, because either function will create a DNS record for the domain causing the other function to fail because a DNS record already exists for the domain.

Either that, or I am myself unclear as to how DA works (which is entirely possible btw) :)

PS. Best wishes to all!

Everyone is right. (Wouldn't it be nice if that was always the case, lol)

Thanks everyone, this thread can now be closed.
