How Name Server is used to transfer site

I'm having difficulty to understand a basic fact about transferring domain.

I have a site on dreamhost, trasnferring it to Layered Technologies with DirectAdmin. I followed the instructions for creating name server (http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=130)

Now I have ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com on my box.

If I understand correctly I need to update the whois info with the new name servers ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com to do the actual transfer and propagation.

But it seems illogical that I should just give ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com as the whois information since they contain mydomain.com (the domain I'm transferring), which means nothing because it is not yet hooked to the IP of the new server.

What am I missing here ?

who is your registrar?
Have you created the nameserver link to your ip?
Have you done the creation of nameserver on your server?

After you get the name servers setup on your server you go to your registrar and edit the domain you used when making the name servers on your server. Once you have the domain properties open at your registrar you want to register that domain as a name server /DNS server. Once you register it give it about 20 minutes and then you can edit the domain again and point the DNS to the name server you just registered.

I decided to go with namecheap.com

My registrar is dreamhost currently and apparently they do not register name servers.

So I decided to go for namecheap.com. Their offer includes name server so I don't have to set one up myself, register it etc..

I hope that I'm not missing anything in the puzzle. Right now I'm waiting for the domain to move from Dreamhost to namecheap before I can do anything.

And thanks for the help !

I have a feeling that you are missing what they mean by providing name servers, either that or I am misunderstanding you. You do not want to use thiers, it is not what you are trying to do.

I have never used the namecheap interface but once you get the name transfered you still need to register your domain as a name server before you can point domains to it.

Here is what they offer

Here is what they write:

" Free Real Time DNS Servers

* Increase the speed and performance of your website by using our geographically dispersed name servers.
* Real-time DNS updates with Dynamic DNS option.
* You can create up to 50 "hosts", or sub-domains, under your name.
* You can also create a catch-all sub-domain.
* We provide advanced options so that you can setup all your DNS records like A Address, MX records and CNAME records using our control panel.
"

Doesn't that mean that I can use this feature as name server that will point to the domain on my dedicated server ?

And a Question - Do I need also to setup local DNS records on my box (using DirectAdmin) or this feature (above) replaces the local DNS settings completely ?

You can use their nameservers, but obviously you'll need to get support and answers to your questions from them, not from us.

You'll have to make sure the nameserver information you set up with them is the same as what DA automatically sets up for you.

You shouldn't delete the nameserver information DA sets up, but you should change the NS records to those you're actually using (at the registrar), both on the DA server, and with them.

What about bind ?

If I use namechep DNS. Do I need to setup bind on my server ? Is it what Directadmin actually does ?

Thanks,
Nir

You do need BIND on your server. (Well, technically I suppose you don't, but if you don't not a single one of us would like to support you when you run into problems and ask questions :) .)

Whether DA or your OS distribution sets it up for you depends on your OS distribution.

It's your responsibility to make sure it's running.
