HowTo: MailScanner 4.24 for Exim 4.24

similar would be a better word :)

I haven't run MS on FreeBSD for about 4 years, so I can't remember off the top of my head where files end up etc., You'd be best advised to have a look at the official documentation on the MS site and ask on the mailing list if you need assistance or pointers

You'd be better off downloading the ClamAv + SA tarball from the MailScanner site. Avoids all those issues :)

can't your help me

Hello all,

after digging through this very long thread I did not find the answer to my problem. The same question was asked by 'locateme', 'joh2900', 'pinooo' and indirectly by 'snaaps'.

I want to ask the question again, so we can get an answer on the forum (and to fix my problem ;-) )

PROBLEM:
I followed the HOWTO and reached the point where the working of exim is tested. However, only some mail is delivered to /var/spool/exim.in/input.

# service MailScanner stop
# service exim restart

Try to send an email to an account that the exim is handling. When the email arrives it should be placed in the /var/spool/exim.in/input
directory. If it doesn't then the exim incoming process isn't working properly.

Result:
* Only mail sent from the server itself is stored in /var/spool/exim.in.input. This is automatic mail sent by root with daily status reports.

* Mail sent through the webmail interface (squirrelmail) and mail sent from home through Outlook Express is delivered straight to the users mailbox.

* looking at the process list I only see one instance of exim, why is the second one, using the normal exim.conf not started?

[root@bitmap input]# ps aux|grep exim
mail 27896 0.0 0.1 7744 1864 ? Ss 11:28 0:00 /usr/sbin/exim -bd -C /etc/exim_outgoing.conf -q15m -oP /var/run/exim.pid

So:
- Which part of exim is not working as it should?
- Why is there only one exim running? (I don't see the exim_outgoing.pid!)<edited>
- Why does only mail sent from the shell get placed in /var/spool/exim.in/input?

- How did locateme, joh2900, pinooo and snaaps fix their problem?

Thanks to all that comment in these forums, you are (digital) lifesavers!

what to do with spam

Hey guys,

Has anyone developed a method for the user to decide what to do with the spam that's received? Before I installed mailscanner I used the standard spamassassin method which allowed users to set their own threshhold aswell as decide what's done with the email, i.e. deleted, mark or move to another folder, is this possible with the mailscanner addition?

I receive about 200 spam messages a day and normally a SHIFT CLICK, CTRL click, select to delete approach works fine for outlook with a PC, however I recently started to use a PDA when out on the road and this is not as simple a tast, plus not to mention the transfer fees for all the un-needed data.

Some of my users forward their email to their cellphone as a text message and many have asked for this feature because of the amount of spam being caught now days...

Any ideas people? ;)

Thanks
Baz

SpamBlocker doesn't scan. It wasn't designed to scan.

So I don't know what you mean.

Do you mean it's not blocking any email?

Have you configured it?

To configure it you have to set up a webpage, change references in the exim.conf file (delivered as example.com) to point to your webpage, and populate the /etc/virtual/use_rbl_domains file.

The README for SpamBlocker is here.

Sendmail

i have just found a problem and i was wondering if anyone else has had it too.

with MailScanner running, any mail sent with the php/cgi "sendmail" does not get sent. I have tried on and off server emails, and that doesn't work either.

One of my users says SpamAssassin is blocking the email

I would also like to know if there is a more up2date how-to for the latest Exim and Mailscanner?

I to would like to see a current howto as they are now old and very out of date....
