Huge Problems With Directadmin

I don't know how to login as root and do all that stuff. So I had DirectAdmin installed on the machine and so far, it's been one of the biggest mistakes of my life.

I setup 2 domains so far. Neither of them work correctly. When you go to domain.com it works, but when you go to www.domain.com, it doesn't.

Email doesn't work. I've setup countless email boxes and I can get them to send email, but not receive. I also cannot find anything that will conclusively tell me even what URL I should be using to check/receive mail. The URL it gives when I setup each mailbox does NOT work. It loads up, but it won't accept any username/password.

DirectAdmin's telephone number does NOT work. I emailed them and did NOT receive a response.

Last straw. I had several "test" usernames setup on the server so I could try different ways of figuring this stuff out. I selected 4 for deletion, DirectAdmin deleted 5. It deleted the single most important user on my server. My hosting company says they've "never heard of directadmin doing that before". Well, you've all heard of it now.

I have absolutely had it up to here with this software, and if it weren't my job to make all this crap work, I would send it out on it's keyster.

ANYONE THAT CAN HELP ME PLEASE IM ME ON

I can't afford to be messing around with this second-rate software anymore while not getting any satisfactory results, and I can't afford to wait around for them to email me back any longer. So PLEASE someone out there HELP ME.

Andrew,

I'm just a newbie too and I just got my first DA server a few weeks ago. With that said, I'll try to help you as much as I can. Other people in here will also help you when they can.

You can either telnet or ssh to your server via the IP address provided by your server provider. ssh is strongly recommended because it's more secure.

You need to to create a A record with a value of www for your domain.

Make sure there's an MX record for your domain too.

Here are the URLs you can use to access webmail, control panel:

http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail or http://www.yourdomain.com/squirrelmail for webmail access.

http://www.yourdomain.com:2222 or http://yourIPadress:2222 to access the control panel.

Did you follow these:
http://www.directadmin.com/newinstall.html
http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65

Hope this helps.

First, I understand your frustration, but calling it second rate software and other names on their forum isn't usually the way to get the best support.

All the URL's that tell you how to ftp and manage your domain, are sent to the email address given of the user you are trying to create. So, for example if [email protected] was the email given for the domain owner, the info will get mailed to [email protected]. If the email wasn't sent, then there may be some problem with exim (SMTP server) or your DNS.

The mailbox users, should be logging in with the full email address of the user and the password. So for example [email protected] would use [email protected] as the username and the what ever was set as the password. This is quite common for shared servers to do it this way. Only the domain owner can log in using the username only.

As far as deleting too may users, I have never heard of that either.

You say you setup two domains, did they both propagated properly? I would goto http://www.dnsreport.com/ and plug those domain names in and see what it has to say. It will usually tell you where the problem lies.

And hiding the names of "broken" domains won't help either; if the original poster had posted his real domain names I (and perhaps someone else earlier) would have told him of any dns or email problems by now.
