I need to change my server IP but the seller says it's not possible! Why?

I have been using DirectAdmin for several years and I am very satisfied and it covers all the needs of my company, but I need to upgrade my system and my IP is changing. I asked the seller from whom I purchased the DirectAdmin license several years ago to change my IP on the DirectAdmin panel, but the seller, who is a very respectable and reputable person, said: No. DirectAdmin has taken away the ability to change IP from us for several years. I want to know why? Because I live in Iran?! I am now forced to go to a free web panel and I do not want this to happen at all.

Because these are the rules — regardless of country, religion, gender, eye color, or any other factor — legacy licenses cannot be changed.

I assume this license was originally sold to the person you got it from for internal use only.

And this is exactly what’s wrong with the world today: when something isn’t possible, people immediately assume it must be related to discrimination based on country, religion, or other personal factors, rather than simply following the rules that apply to everyone equally.

I also think you got scammed.
However, this is not DA's fault, and you're not forced to go to a free web panel either.

There is always the option to get a legal license directly from directadmin.com and then the only change you need to make is to change your license key, which is quite easy.

@julio We don't have official license sellers (those who can legally contract on our behalf), so it means you using someone else's license.

This could be fully legitimate (no abuse or scam) if:

- A retail license, and they tell you the license key.
- A datacenter (internal) license is bundled together server rental.

Could you confirm it's one of these situations? If so, we'd be happy to dig deeper.

Thank you for your answer, but I still have the Direct Admin license on the server, it is valid and is updated regularly. This will happen in the near future, about two weeks, when I want to make changes. How can I give access to Direct Admin to check whether my license is valid or not and whether it is possible to change its IP in the Direct Admin panel?

Look like abused license, he scammed you 😁.
I don't think so because I had a license problem several times and the problem was solved with the DirectAdmin command itself. If there was a license problem, it should have given an error message.

My license has no illegal issues and it is working now and I am willing to give access to my server so that the Direct Admin support expert can check and give his opinion. My only problem is that I cannot change my IP for the next two weeks. The seller is a reseller and used to buy in bulk and sell individually. I have had it and use it for more than 10 years.

That's exactly it. I bought a legal license and it's working now and my license is completely legal and approved by DirectAdmin servers. How can you help and check I will be grateful for changing the IP. I also have all the legal information and I can provide it. Thanks

As long as he sold it together with a server it's legal, otherwise it's working but the seller is abusing the license. ;)
Anyway, DA sales will help you further on this.
Yes, it is working now and there is no problem. It's just that because I want to upgrade the operating system to CentOS 8 and my internet line is changing to fiber optic, my IP will change and I need to be able to change this IP and operating system type in the Direct Admin sales panel.

According to your screenshot this is an external license so legal in this case, and the owner can to change the ip via the control panel from Directadmin when he logs in there.
There is a new license method he might not be aware of, this does not require ip setting anymore.
A server can be locked to an ip nowadays but that is not required. When installing DA newly, another ip can be used automatically. That is no issue with an external license, which you do have.
So if he keeps saying it can't be done, then most likely he does not want to, or he has to come read on the forums.

P.s. if you are re-installing I would choose for Almalinux 9, not 8.

Dear Richard, thank you for your suggestion. Almalinux 9 is a good choice. I didn't know. So you are saying that if my IP changes, I won't have any problems installing DirectAmin? Because I only have the license ID and user ID. Should I be at ease?

It's actually an internal (datacenter) license. @julio should be able to confirm this by checking license page using Evo skin. It looks like the old skin relies on a binary descriptor (external or internal) which doesn't exist any more.

The license name confirms this: mohsendavari.com SERVER RENTAL ONLY

@julio You mention using this license for 10 years -- can you confirm you have been renting a server with this DA license for 10 years? It doesn't even look like the datacenter is in business any more (the domain doesn't load a website), so that's another strange thing. You also mention changing your own internet line which doesn't match with renting a server somewhere.

I did not rent a server, but the server is for myself and it works inside the company. I only bought a license from that person, you are right, that domain is no longer active, and I contacted him via Telegram. I do not know why he deactivated his domain. As for the good skin, this is my choice because I am comfortable. Whenever you need it, I can give access via anydesk so you can check it yourself. I can also change the skin, take a screenshot of it in evo mode

Not in that case. I also wasn't aware screenshots could give wrong info. Just reading this as I was answering you, so seems you're not safe.
Please tell me what I should do to make sure my license is completely legal and has no problems.

My server had problems a few times and I had an internet outage and the license would expire, which was fixed with this command. Of course, it's fine now. I was just worried that if the IP changed, my DirectAdmin license would no longer work, and it seemed like it wasn't without reason.
DirectAdmin Licensing

echo '*********************************************' > /usr/local/directadmin/conf/license.key
chmod 0600 /usr/local/directadmin/conf/license.key
systemctl restart directadmin
